Principal's Message

Solar Eclipse

Dear GBW Families,

Our students had a blast on Monday viewing the partial solar eclipse.  Thank you to our PTA for funding the glasses so our students could view this amazing phenomenon.  This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until 2044, so we are thrilled that our students had an opportunity to witness the event.

Thank you again PTA!

Mr. Blount, Mr. Cook, and GBW Community

Chantilly Pyramid Art Show

Chantilly Art Show

Congratulations to our students who had their artwork selected to be proudly displayed at the annual Chantilly Pyramid Art show.  These students have been working hard all year on their art projects, and it was so exciting to see their artwork professionally displayed at Chantilly High School last Friday during our Pyramid Art show.  Thanks also to Mrs. Fillers and Mrs. Martin for helping to support students in their art journeys!

The Hope Pregozen Playground Dedication Ceremony

Back in 2021, one of our teachers named Hope Pregozen lost her life to COVID during the pandemic.  We have been working with the FCPS school board to help dedicate our adapted playground to Hope in honor of the work she did to serve our students with disabilities.  We will be hosting a special dedication ceremony on Friday, April 26th to dedicate our playground to Hope Pregozen, and we have invited members of Hope's family to be present for the ceremony.  Our hope is our GBW families will also come out to help us properly dedicate this playground to Hope Pregozen.  We will have a reception following the ceremony.  Families are invited to help us celebrate the contributions of Hope Pregozen to our GBW community at this event.  After the brief dedication ceremony, we will open up the playground for children to play on while we invite families to stay and enjoy the new addition to our community.

Fairfax County Health Department School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. As we approach the month of May, we want to remind everyone about the upcoming SOL (Standards of Learning) testing for our Pandas. These assessments provide valuable insights into their progress and areas for growth.

Here are the testing dates for each grade level:

We encourage families to ensure that students are on time on the days of their testing. If you know your child is going to be late or absent on a testing date, please let their teacher know as soon as possible.

Let's rally together as a community to support our students as they tackle the SOL tests. Together, we can help them succeed and reach their full potential. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our schools.

Best wishes to all students participating in the SOL testing!

If you have any questions please reach out and let us know,

Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12  took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.
