Churchill Chatter - Issue 15, April, 2024

Dear Churchill Road Families,

It’s hard to believe Spring Break is behind us, and we are into the final quarter of the school year!  We were happy to welcome our students back on Wednesday.

This week, our staff spent Tuesday morning engaged in professional development focused on the new Language Arts curriculum for next year, as well as our new Virginia Math standards. Our PTA lunch, that followed, hit the spot! Thank you so much for your generosity to our staff.

Our final round of grade level community conversations began and will continue over the next few weeks.  We hope that many of you will be able to join us – look for the eNotify reminders.  We will begin introducing you to the new Language Arts curriculum we will be using next year.

The Kid’s Heart Challenge, an educational and fundraising program to raise awareness of heart health just ended.  Our students raised an impressive $26,317, placing them second in Fairfax County.  We are grateful to have such solid support for this important initiative.  As we look ahead, Wednesday of next week (April 10) is the observance of Eid-al-Fitr and a holiday for students and staff. We hope that all of our families who celebrate enjoy this day.

On April 17, we celebrate military families with Purple Up Day.  The following week, April 22-26 is our Earth Week Spirit Week.  The week ends with fun basketball games between our 3-6 grade girls and boys against their Oakton Elementary counterparts at Madison High School at 6 p.m on Friday, April 26.  We hope many of you will attend!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr and Ms. Jen Niccolls

Kid's Heart Challenge

heart challenge

Churchill has Heart!!! The Physical Education department would like to give a big thank you to all the students and families that participated in the American Heart Association’s Kid’s Heart Challenge Fundraiser! Due to your efforts Churchill Road raised an impressive $26,317.67 . Churchill is currently the 2nd highest fundraising school in Fairfax County and the 11th highest fundraising school in the Commonwealth of Virginia!  In the 23 years Churchill Road has participated in Jump Rope for Heart and now Kid’s Heart Challenge, Churchill has raised $391,597.72

We had 160 students participate in the fundraising side. Fifty-eight families learned hands only CPR and all students learned different ways to be a heart hero.

Our top fundraiser this year was Lyla S. (6th Grade) with a whopping $3,459.51 raised. Other top fundraisers include Lilah M. (1st Grade) $3,061.48 and Sebastian H. (2nd Grade) $1,290.76 raised (not pictured). As always, it was a total team effort this year!

Most impressive was the enthusiasm displayed by our students to further the cause and awareness of heart disease. The money raised will be used to fund groundbreaking research that helps kids and adults survive and thrive with serious heart diseases and conditions. It also helps fund programs that trains people how to perform lifesaving CPR.  All of you are Heart Heroes!  Thank you again for all your support and effort the last couple of weeks!

Mr. Varhol
