Dear Dranesville Families,

Welcome back to school and to the Fourth Quarter! It’s so hard to believe we are on our way to winding up this school year. I hope you had a wonderful break and had time to enjoy family and the spring weather. I feel ready to tackle the busy School Board work ahead after taking time to enjoy the outdoors and spending time with my family.

The School Board is continuing to work on our Budget, and I hope you share your thoughts at the Fairfax County Public Hearings, the FCPS Budget Public Hearing, and to our Virginia delegates. Below I provide more details on the advertised budget and on the importance of fully funding every Virginian student’s education. We had our second Work Session on the SY 24-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) and heard the baseline Goal 5 and Goal 2 reports of our 2023-30 Strategic Plan. Also, this month and next bring opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ideas with Dr. Reid and on the possibility of later start times for our middle schools. More details and signups are below.

Please remember that school buses and students are walking to and from school again. We all need to give ourselves enough time to travel in the many Dranesville construction zones and our neighborhoods. Next week, the 495 NEXT Project will have a virtual and in-person meeting to provide updates and answer questions.

I continue to visit schools and attend school plays (I’m excited to see our high schools’ musicals), concerts, and sporting events to celebrate our students and school staff. I hope to see you this spring at one of the many events in Dranesville.

Robyn

Dr. Reid's Academic Matters- March 21

Applying Math Concepts in Real World

During Academic Matters at the March 21 School Board meeting, Dr. Reid shared how FCPS is strengthening numeracy — the ability to apply math concepts in the real world — in primary grades.

FCPS has been investing in professional development through Add+Vantage Math Recovery © (AVMR), and teachers are using a scripted intervention curriculum to support numeracy instruction.

See students demonstrating their numeracy. Watch Dr. Reid’s presentation or view her slides.

Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of our Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education. Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

FCPS is now in the middle of the annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback. For more details on our advertised budget, view FCPS budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

New Athletic Opportunities for Students

The FCPS FY 25 advertised budget expands high school athletics with boys volleyball and girls wrestling, giving students more ways to nurture their passion and enhance their well-being.

Did You Know?

In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky.

Contact your state officials to provide feedback on funding for K-12 education.

Kindergarten Registration

Read this photo essay from Mosaic Elementary School for a glimpse of what it’s like to be a kindergartener. Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school. After determining which school your child will attend, parents/caregivers may prepare for registration by gathering documents, and completing forms. For details and language support, please visit the Kindergarten Registration page.

Online Registration Now Open!

Online registration for FCPS students is now open for the 2024-25 school year. Learn about the online registration process.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Exploratorium's Choose Your Eclipse Adventure

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible along a thin line arcing through Mexico to Texas to Maine. Even if you’re not in the path of the actual eclipse, we have several ways for you to experience this awe-inspiring event. Visit our eclipse website for classroom activities, science videos, cultural explorations, and more, and be sure to tune in to our livestream on April 8, in partnership with NASA. Visit this Exploratorium webpage to learn more.

Lexia: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Caregiver Virtual Information Night- April 9

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m., to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

Five day isolation period for COVID-19 is no longer recommended. New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved. Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Beginning May 1, FCPS high schools will offer athletic pre-participation physical exams for students interested in MS sports SY 2024-25. These events serve as the primary fundraiser for our high school athletic training programs and each exam costs $50. Rising MS students are eligible to receive a physical at no cost although donations to the HS athletic training program are welcomed.

Pre-registration is highly encouraged; walk-in appointments may not be available. You can register here: Student registration. Once your registration is received, the school’s athletic trainer will contact you to confirm your appointment time. Athletic physical exams must be completed on this form: FCPS Middle School Sports Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination Form (PPE).
