PTSO News

Take This Survey and the PTSO Gets $500!

Dr. Ben Bigelow from the Construction Science Division at University of Oklahoma selected parents and guardians at Woodson to participate in their research titled “Influences and Perceptions of Parents on Construction Careers.” This research is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma.

There is an ongoing shortage of skilled tradespeople in construction, this project seeks to better understand parent’s perceptions, preferences, and motivators relating to career pathways.  As primary influencers of the next generation of workers, parental perceptions are vital in understanding how to address the shortage of skilled workers.

This survey is collecting perceptions from parents around the country to identify the best strategies for addressing this issue.

If we get enough participants, they will donate $500 to our PTSO!

Parent Volunteers Needed!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

JV Softball:

Tough week for the Varsity Girls as they were defeated by West Potomac on Tuesday 12-6. Sedona Adams, Kelby Lennen, Claire Warden, and Penny Elliott each collected two hits for the Cavs. Claire Warden and Delaney Fleming combined for 7 Strikeouts.

The Cavs fell to Lake Braddock in an exciting game 1-0 on Thursday on the final play of the game. The game was tied at zero in the bottom of the ninth.  The pitching was strong on both sides, Claire Warden had 16 strikeouts.  Emma Fleming and Delaney Fleming each collected one hit for Woodson.

Varsity Softball:

Varsity Softball players honored several Woodson Teachers who have inspired them at their home opener.  Thankyou for all your support!

Varsity Softball Honors Woodson Teachers at Game

JV Boys Soccer:

JV Boys Soccer had another exciting week.  Tuesday the team faced Justice and Aseel Alethaim, and Jackson Argentina led their team to victory outscoring Justice 2-0.  Thursday JV defeated Chantilly 1-0.  Single goal by Aseel Alethaim.  Goalies Thomas Warden, Thomas Syron, and Luke Goodson combined for a clean sheet.

Track & Field:

It was a wet one at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invitational at West Springfield.  Woodson had several athletes place in the top 5 despite the weather.  100 M: Ashley Lofton and Justin Anderson, 400 M: Connor Lican, 800 M: Monika Lukas, 100 M Hurdles: Courtney Butts, 300 M Hurdles: Rhyan Parker, David Freeman, and Courtney Butts, Pole Vault: Heather Calderon and Triple Jump: Gabrielle Zupan

Rowing (AKA Crew):

On March 30, at a travel regatta set in Middletown, Delaware (a picturesque location where the film Dead Poets Society was filmed), Woodson, ACHS, W&L, McLean and TJHSST crews met to compete with St. Andrews on their hometown Noxontown Pond. Woodson continued to show off their hard work and talent, placing in the top three for all events entered!

Rowing Results from March 30th

JV Baseball:

The Woodson Cavaliers JV Baseball Team fell 12-4 to the Lake Braddock Bruins on a cold and clear evening at Woodson's R. Lee Knupp field.

Sophomore hurler Will Wise got the starting nod for the Cavs and faced the minimum number of batters in the first two innings. Wise ran into some trouble in the 3rd when the Bruins managed to string together some seeing eye singles before leadoff man Ryan Harding roped a double to deep left on his second plate appearance against Wise. In all, Braddock plated 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning.

The visitors scored three more in the 4th inning, expanding their lead to 7-0. Wise (3.2 innings, 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts) was relieved by Caleb Noble midway through the inning.

Woodson began clawing back in their half of the 5th. Evan Honeysett got things started with a line drive single to right and would later reach second when the Bruins failed to convert an attempted 6-4-3 double play on Nick Prabhakar's ground out. The Honey Badger advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored the Cavs first run on a Colton Mayes RBI single. Zach VanLanen later added to the hit parade with a RBI single of his own making the score 8-3 after five innings.

Cavalier relievers Nobel and Liam Wade were unable to contain the Bruins offense and the visitors soon stretched the lead to 11-3.

The dynamic duo of Honeysett and Mayes would strike again in the bottom of the 6th with Mayes getting his second RBI of the contest. It wouldn't be enough however, and the contest ended 12-4.

Colton Mayes paced the Cavalier offense going 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs on the night while Evan Honeysett was 1-4 with 2 runs scored.

Woodson's JV Cavaliers visit West Springfield on Tuesday April 2nd.

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition - Deadline April 29, 2024

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
