A Note from Mr. Gates

As we begin our much-awaited Spring Break, I want to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you for a safe and joyful Spring Break.

This past Friday marked the end of the third quarter of school Our school offices are closed March 25 - 29 for Spring Break. Teachers will respond to messages when they return on Monday, April 1 for planning and professional learning. We hope everyone has plans for getting outside, enjoying some time for reading & relaxing and have fun with family. Students return for the start of the fourth quarter on Wednesday April 3.

Chronic Absenteeism remains a significant concern at Hollin Meadows. Although we have seen an improvement form the 2022 - 2023 school year, nearly 20% of our students have been absent more than 10% of the school year to date (12 or more days). Studies have shown that two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Chronic absenteeism is monitored by the Virginia Department of Education and can negatively impact school accreditation ratings. Unless they are sick, please send your student to school every day. Please note: students should still come to school on days they have routine doctor's appointments. Students attending for a portion of the day are not counted absent.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Hollin Meadows and your child's education.

Jon Gates

Principal

Attendance2

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.
