Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L.

R.E.A.L.

It is an opportunity to build Routines, increase Engagement, provide Access to resources, and support Learning!

Dear CRES Community,

As you may be aware, chronic absenteeism refers to students missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. While attendance is crucial for academic success and student well-being, we understand that various factors can impact a child's ability to attend school regularly.

It is with a sense of urgency and commitment that we address this issue head-on. Our school has been identified by the federal government as having a significant number of students who meet the criteria for chronic absenteeism. While this designation presents us with challenges, it also serves as a call to action for us to come together as a community to support our students and families in overcoming barriers to regular attendance. While this issue impacts students across all subgroups, our Hispanic subgroup is most prominently impacted.

To address this significant concern, we will continue our comprehensive plan to address chronic absenteeism and promote positive attendance habits among our students. This plan includes:

  1. Data Analysis and Monitoring: We will continue to closely monitor attendance data to identify trends and patterns among our students. We will tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of our students and families.

  2. Family Engagement: We will continue our outreach to families to provide support and resources to help overcome barriers to attendance, such as transportation issues, health concerns, or other challenges.

  3. Intervention Strategies: We will continue to create personalized attendance plans and incentives for maintained and improved attendance.

  4. Community Partnerships: We will collaborate with community organizations to provide wraparound support for students and families facing challenges related to attendance.

  5. Promoting a Positive School Culture: We will continue to foster a positive and inclusive school culture where students feel valued, supported, and motivated to attend school regularly. Through engaging curriculum, meaningful relationships, and extracurricular activities, we aim to create a school environment that promotes a love of learning and a desire to be present.

To this end, we invite every family to attend our Town Hall on April 3rd, at 6:30 pm, in our cafeteria. You will hear from school administration, team members from The Office of School Support, and our Region 4 leadership. Our community has the option to attend online or in-person, and synchronous translation support will be provided for those who attend in-person. Please RSVP so we can best prepare for your participation.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership with this important endeavor and for prioritizing your children's education.

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home.
