World Down Syndrome Day

On Thursday, March 21 we will raise awareness for Down Syndrome by wearing fun socks! Individuals who have Down Syndrome have an extra (3rd/ “Tri”) chromosome on the 21st pair of chromosomes.  Instead of having 46 total chromosomes, individuals with Down Syndrome have 47.  Individuals with Down Syndrome have varying degrees of developmental disabilities and certain recognizable physical features.  The idea of wearing mismatched/crazy socks was started several years ago by a man with Down Syndrome because chromosomes under the microscope are shaped like knee socks. Please also consider viewing this brief video “Just Like You- Down Syndrome” for more information.
