Spring Book Give Away

Our Bren Mar Park students were able to choose books to keep and take home this week. This was thanks to two local high school students, Lily Brody and Marwa Faryadi, who collected and donated nearly 2000 books to Bren Mar Park Elementary.

Family Volunteer Opportunities

Career Day:

BMP is hosting a Career Day on June 6th from 2:15 - 3:30 and we are looking for presenters! On Career Day, presenters will share information with our grades 3-5 students about their careers. Our goal is to have a variety of fields represented in order to give students an opportunity to envision themselves in different professions.

Presenters will share in three, 20-minute rotations:

  • training requirements of their occupation
  • satisfactions and dissatisfactions of their job
  • school skills used in their job
  • what a typical day might include
  • related jobs to their career field
  • anything else that they feel students might be interested in!

If you are interested in presenting, please fill out this google form or email Kristin Feathers at kmfeathers@fcps.edu

Specialist Spotlight - Counseling

Our Mustangs have learned so much about their feelings in the past month. During guidance lessons, our students learned a little more about Zones of Regulation. We read books and worked on activities that helped our students understand more about the Zones of Regulation four feeling colors. We read the book “Ruby has a Worry” (Yellow Zone), “Ravi’s Roar” (Red Zone), “I am feeling sad” (Blue Zone) and our favorite “I am Calm” (Green Zone). We remind our students that the Zones of Regulation is like a traffic light, the Greens means that you are ready to go (ready to learn, calm), the Yellow means that you are almost on Red, so you need to slow down (worry, wiggly) and the Red means STOP (angry, or out of control).

We always remind our students that all feelings are okay, however it is very important for them to always get back to the green zone. There are many ways to bring them back to green zone, for example using the Lazy 8 Breathing strategy, taking a break in their classroom to read, drawing or coloring, listening to calm music, and playing with puzzles.

We also have talked with our students about including others when you see a friend playing by themselves or feeling left out. There is a great book called “The Invisible Boy” that discusses feeling invisible and lonely, the main character in the story is black and white and starts to show color when he feels included by others. These books can be found on Youtube, and you can ask your students about what books they have been reading to expand their learning.

Getting to Know Your BMP Staff

Kristin Feathers SBTS (School Based Technology Specialist)

Kristin Feathers

Hi! This will be my 9th year teaching, and I have spent all nine years at BMP.  I spent my first six years as a 3rd grade teacher and then switched to this role.

I grew up in FCPS and then went to William and Mary for college and grad school. I got married last year (you might still hear kids call me Ms. Kurtz) and I have a baby girl born in October.
