Principal's Message

3-14

Dear Shrevewood Families,

What an incredible week of learning, fun, and excitement it has been here at Shrevewood! Our second-grade students embarked on a thrilling field trip to Imagination Stage, while our News Crew students had an enriching visit to the WJLA Station. Additionally, all students were treated to a captivating preview of the sixth-grade musical earlier today.

Looking ahead, please note that from March 25th to the 29th, we will be observing Spring Break. Our and school and offices will be closed during this time. We extend our warmest wishes to our students and teachers for a happy and rejuvenating Spring Break! Our office will reopen on Monday, April 1st, but please be aware that there will be no school for students on April 1st and 2nd due to scheduled school planning and teacher work days.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Kindergarten Orientation - April 2 at 2:00 p.m.

orientation

We will host our Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, April 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is designed for parents and rising kindergarten students to gain insights into what kindergarten entails at Shrevewood. Participants will have the opportunity to explore classrooms, meet our dedicated staff, and begin forming connections with future classmates. We look forward to welcoming our rising Kindergarten families to this informative and engaging event.

If you have a rising Kindergarten student, please fill out this new student intake form to begin the registration process. If you have a neighbor or friend with a child who will be turning five on or before September 30th, please pass along this information!

If you have any questions about the registration process, reach out to our Student Information Assistant, Sebastian Brennan, at snbrennan@fcps.edu.

Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation Week (SAW) is May 6th-10th and our PTA committee is hard at work arranging meals, games, raffle prizes, and more! Please visit the PTA Staff Appreciation Week website to see the different ways to support and sign up to help show our Shrevewood owl-stars how much we appreciate them and make the week a success!

Prearranged Absences

Parents are encouraged to minimize student absences during school hours and to plan family trips and vacations during school holidays. If a student will be absent for more than one day, parents should submit a prearranged absence request, so teachers and administrators are alerted to the absence reasons and a plan to handle missed work is developed. Requests for prearranged absences for longer than one school day must be submitted to the school office within a reasonable time (three to five school days in advance) for the principal to review. Prearranged absence requests for periods longer than five school days must be reviewed to prevent student absences from becoming chronic and to avoid withdrawal from school. Student absences can have a significant impact on learning, and priority must be given to ensure that students attend school regularly.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Techstravaganza 2024

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 20th annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST.

Admission is free, food will be for sale, and we hope that you can spread the word in your school. Here is the registration link: https://tinyurl.com/techstrav24. More information about the event can be found on our website at tjtechstrav.org.

When we return from Spring Break, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgement — the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

For individuals, cultivating the character strength of fairness is correlated with highly desirable developmental outcomes. It helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Change in Transportation Protocol

If playdates are planned, the Shrevewood office team must receive notifications from the parents of all students involved.  Playdate notifications may be made via the online Change in Transportation Form or via an email sent to SWESOffice@fcps.edu. For any changes in transportation, please make sure to contact the office no later 3:00 pm.

Procedures when you come to join your children for lunch:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.
