School Office Closed – Spring Break

During the week of March 25 - March 29, the office at Powell ES will be closed.  We are happy to assist you in advance of spring break or immediately following our return.

Message form the Principal

Powell families,

This school year we have focused on instilling the Portrait of a Graduate skills within our students and this past week we were thrilled to have a special guest share about this important work during the PTA meeting. Thank you to Jeff Lonnett from FCPS Instructional Services for sharing a presentation and a big thank you to all of the parents that participated. An overview of the information shared can be found HERE. We also had a great week digging into the learning around Portrait of a Graduate by holding grade level assemblies with our students, K-6. Ask r child today about their grade level assembly they had this week! All of our students had a blast talking about Portrait of a Graduate, how they are using the skills, and how they have grown over time!

We wish everyone a wonderful Spring Break! Whether you are traveling or staying home, we hope you enjoy the week enjoying friends and family.

Don’t forget, Monday and Tuesday are student holidays! We will see everyone when we return to school on Wednesday, March 3rd.

Your Proud Principals, Ms. Luerssen, Ms. Song & Ms. Cho

  • COVID-19 Outbreak Reporting

Students in our 3rd – 6th grade AAP classrooms participated in Make It Market this week.  Our students created a business model and worked to promote their varied products over the past several weeks leading up to the event.  We are proud of our elementary entrepreneurs.

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Neurodiversity Affirmation Week

This week, and for the first time, FCPS celebrated Neurodiversity Affirmation Week. It was a time to recognize, appreciate, and honor the diverse neurological differences that exist among us, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological variations. Our goal is to foster an inclusive environment that values all student’s unique learning styles and strengths, understanding that diversity is not just about the ways in which we differ, but also about embracing these differences to make our community stronger and more vibrant.

6th Grade Shoe Drive

As their community service this school year, our 6th graders will be conducting a shoe drive through Soles4Souls.  Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that provides relief, opportunity, and a reduction of CO2 impact around the world.  As you begin your Spring cleaning, please consider holding on to gently used shoes (adult and child) for this upcoming shoe drive that will run throughout the months of April and May.
