Kindergarten Registration

Do you have, or know of a rising kindergartener scheduled to come to Westgate next year?  All students that turn five by September 30, 2024 are eligible to attend Kindergarten this fall. Please spread the word that registration is underway as we are excited to meet our newest Hornets.  Please consider registering asap since our staffing allocation reflects the number of registered students. Registration information for kindergarten and new students can be found on our website.  You may also contact our student registrar, Melissa Breen at 703.718.8300 or mabreen@fcps.edu if you have additional questions.

March is Reading Month!

Throughout the month of March, Hollin Meadows students and staff celebrate March Reading Month with several activities. Our annual Book Parade will be on Friday March 22. Students and staff carry a copy of a book they’ve read or has been read to them.  All classes will parade inside the school so that others can see the book that is being shared. The main idea of the parade is to celebrate reading and books. Wearing accessories to complement the book choice is optional. More information was sent home in Tuesday folders on March 12.

Throughout the month, students can have or share a photo of themselves and a book for our Shelfie Selfie activity. These closeup photos of the student will include a book whose cover/title shows the student’s name or describes them.  For example, there is an author named Kathy Tucker (not me😊) whose name is on the cover of her book. I took a Shelfie Selfie of me holding that book.  These photos will be displayed in the library.  As I come across library titles that reflect a student, I’ll take a photo of them holding the book. If you have a book at home that fits this activity, you can take the photo and send to me at kdtucker@fcps.edu. Please place in subject line Shelfie Selfie and your child’s first name. Horizontal photos preferred 😊

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are available for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time. Families are encouraged to contact assistant principals, Lisa Lin at lalin@fcps.edu or Tieya White at ttwhite@fcps.edu regarding accomodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.
