KJMS Event Calendar
Good evening, KJMS Community,
What have you been doing with all of that extra daylight since our clocks sprung forward last weekend? We were blessed with amazing weather this week during our final week of winter. We hope your Eagles are getting outside and playing in the sunshine when they get home in the afternoons. Even if they stay for our wonderful after school programming, they still have time in the daylight outside this time of year!
Speaking of after school programming, this past week, we had several student groups celebrating or preparing for final annual events. The Science Olympiad Team is pictured below with their 4th place trophy from their recent competition. Our KJMS Battle of the Books team is deeply embedded in final preparations for their countywide, upcoming competition. We hope you enjoy the pictures of a taste of what is happening with our Eagles in after school programming.
As a reminder, with Spring Break coming, we do not assign homework or projects during the break. If your child elects to work on something to improve grades, that is their choice. Otherwise, we hope you have a rest-filled time with friends and family.
In closing, we have a few Save the Date items for your calendars! Did you know that our PTA meets virtually each month? They have several guests in coming meetings. On April 11, 2024, from 6:30-7:30 PM, you can attend the meeting to meet Fairfax High School’s principal, Dr. Aye. On May 9, 2024, from 6:30-7:30 PM, you can attend the meeting to meet Fairfax City of Schools’ superintendent, Jeff Plattenberg, and school board chair, Carolyn Pitches. Information will be coming out with how to access the meeting link.
One final Save the Date for this coming week: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) invites you to a community conversation focused on addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools. This in-person event will be on Monday, March 18, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Lake Braddock Secondary School (9200 Burke Lake Rd, Burke, VA 22015) in the Auditorium (Enter through door 14). This discussion will provide families and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
Together, as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and sometimes fatal substances. Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. The program is appropriate for grades 6 and up.
Happy last weekend of the winter!
Dr. Tammy Silipigni
Principal
Math Counts is also in full bloom! Students in MATHCOUNTS are celebrating all of their accomplishments this year! They placed 5th place in Chapter Round this year 😊
Attention Rising 9th Graders! The College Partnership Program (CPP) is a program designed to support students in exploring, applying to, and enrolling in college. CPP focuses on academic advising, college visits, family engagement, and preparation beyond high school. CPP was created to systematically mitigate the impact of barriers to access and opportunity, and support students who are from populations that are historically underrepresented on college campuses (including those who are the first in their family to attend college in the U.S., economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, and English language learners) but all students are encouraged to apply. CPP has extended their deadline to apply to Friday, March 22nd. Please see the flyer for more information. Students can also reach out to their current school counselor if they have any other questions.

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from fiscal years (FY) 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in FY 2024. The County’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements.
If the county were to return to transferring 52.6% to FCPS for the upcoming year, that would equate to $63 million more to invest in excellence.

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.
The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.
Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics
To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:
Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.
Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.
Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.
