Integrated Reading and Writing Assessment (IRW)

Beginning this school year, Fifth grade students in the district who take the SOL Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component includes one nonfiction reading passage followed by four to six multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage.

Pine Spring fifth graders will complete this component on the morning of April 9th. Please prioritize their attendance on this day by ensuring your student is present the morning of the assessment.

Parents/guardians may choose to refuse participation in the IRW component while still agreeing for their student to participate in the required SOL Reading test. The IRW component does not fulfill federal participation requirements or influence school accountability calculations. Decisions about how the IRW  results will be communicated to families and teachers this year is pending additional reporting details from the Virginia Department of Education.

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3)

The online Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Third Edition (NNAT3) will be administered to first graders on Monday, April 8th. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school.

The NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. Students are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.

Kindergarten Orientation

K orientation

We're thrilled to invite families of rising kindergarten students to Pine Spring's Kindergarten Orientation on April 2, 2024, from 9AM to 10AM. This event is tailored to provide you with invaluable insights into your child's upcoming kindergarten journey.

During the orientation, you'll have the opportunity to meet the dedicated teachers and administrative team who will be guiding your child's educational path. They'll be available to address any questions or concerns you may have and share essential information about you child's day.

In addition to meeting the faculty, you'll also learn about the best ways to communicate with the school to ensure a strong start for your child. Effective communication between home and school is key to your child's success, and we're here to support you every step of the way.

Your child will have the chance to explore their future classroom environment and engage in fun activities. And to cap off the event, we're offering parents and their children the opportunity to take a bus ride around the neighborhood, creating memorable moments together.

Don't miss out on this informative and interactive event. We can't wait to welcome you and your child to Pine Spring!
