Message from Ms. Kearns
Hello Bruin Families,
Spring is in the air here at Bruin Nation, and you can feel the excitement as we move towards Spring Break. I think we all are ready for the week off as we finish out the 3rd quarter.
We are pleased to host the FCPS Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs on Monday, March 18. This event is so important for all parents and students grades 6 and up, so please join us. Registration is not required but will help coordinate logistical aspects.
Our International Show is finally here on Wednesday, March 20. There are still tickets available and can be purchased using the QR code in the flyer below.
Finally, please note that next Friday's schedule has 2nd and 8th periods flipped for our MS Pep Rally.
Lindsey Kearns
A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.
All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Together, as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and sometimes fatal substances.
Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

SAFER Choices Program
On April 4, 2024, Lake Braddock is bringing the SAFER Choices educational program led by Mike Domitrz to our 8th (period 6) and 10th (period 8) grade students. There will be two assemblies held in the Little Theatre, one for each grade, tailored to be age appropriate. Your student will discover how-to skills for:
- Honoring the boundaries of one's self and others.
- Understanding the importance of consent (asking first).
- Intervening when disrespect is occurring in front of you.
- Supporting survivors of sexual assault.
- Addressing today's pressures - such as sexting and inappropriate pictures/pornography.
- Building a healthier school culture.
If you wish to opt your student out of the SAFER Choices presentation, please email Kristin Girardin at kegirardin@fcps.edu.
In the evening, we will offer a free one-hour parent program at Lake Braddock, hosted by Mr. Domitrz. The program entitled, “SAFER Choices for my Child in a Sexualized World,” will start at 7:00 pm on April 4th in the Little Theatre. By attending the evening parent program, we hope parents will gain useful skills and strategies for helping students make safer choices around relationships, dating, substances, and consent. Parents of any grade level student are welcome to attend.
Spring Testing
The Spring Testing calendar is now available, with scheduling information on the Senior Survey, SOL and AP Testing. For full information about SOL testing, including laptop information, testing notifications, etc., please check out the SOL Schedule and General Information section of our website.
Congratulations to our HS Counseling Department who met the criteria to become a Recognized ASCA Model Program by the American School Counselor Association!

Lake Braddock is now an official Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, The National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. This is a significant achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students. Congratulations to LB's Math Honor Society and its sponsor, Ms. Saja Abduljabbar.

We are in need of adult support for the Mulch Delivery scheduled for this weekend, March 16-17. If you can help out even just a few hours it would be a great help. The proceeds go to support the All Night Grad Party, and without your volunteer support we may not be able to deliver the mulch as promised. This is a great way to give back to the school, and help out those seniors.

Celebrating Arts in our Schools
The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including:
Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.
March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.
Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) is a celebration of theatre in our schools and schools in our theatres. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the goals of TIOS are to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students. While TIOS presentations and advocacy may happen anytime in schools, theatres, and other public spaces, AATE and EdTA will recognize and promote March as the official Theatre In Our Schools month.

Measles Is Preventable
Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.
The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.
Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics
To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:
Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.
Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.
Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.
April 8 Solar Eclipse Resources and Safety Reminders
A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024 and will be viewable, depending on weather, in the Fairfax County area. In our area, the eclipse will begin around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m. This timing overlaps with some dismissal times and it is crucial that schools reiterate the importance of safe viewing practices.
FCPS safety guidelines do not permit direct viewing of the sun even with protective eyewear and encourages indirect (projection) viewing, including solar boxes and pinhole projectors. A one-page document with safe viewing practices and how to make these devices with their students will be shared with science teachers K-12 via Schoology groups.
We again encourage schools to share the Solar Eclipse Resources FCPS website link with their communities to access resources that include safe viewing practices and a NASA link for the eclipse live stream. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
