Career Day at Woodley Hills Elementary School (WHES) will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m..  Our goal is to expose our students to a wide range of careers and to help them develop an awareness of the many facets of the career world.  We would like to ask that students dress-up as their favorite career or wear a favorite college shirt on Career Day!

A huge thank you to all the parents and community members who are taking time out of their busy schedules to volunteer!  Career Day would not be a success without you!

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

2024 Family Engagement Survey

.

WHAT

FCPS is administering its third Family Engagement Survey to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school communities. Results will be used to develop a plan to improve family and school partnerships throughout the division to support student success.

WHY

The survey is designed to gather data for Strategic Plan Pillar B: Vibrant Home, School, and Community Partnerships; and to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools and community. The survey will also be used to measure our current success with family engagement, and allow us to deepen that engagement and continue building trust while empowering families to support their students’ success.

WHENThe Family Engagement Survey is open from Sunday, March 3, through Friday, March 22

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  • Independent research firm K12 Insight sent email invitations with a survey link to all adults attached to each student in SIS. Emancipated students will not receive the survey.
  • Parents/caregivers can also take the survey at this link or access the survey from FCPS’ website.
  • Paper surveys are available at each school’s main office.
  • Reminder emails will automatically be sent to parents/caregivers who have yet to complete the survey.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Topics include welcoming environment, communication, student success, advocacy, family and school partnerships, and community partnerships.
  • Survey is available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese
  • All survey responses are confidential. K12 Insight is administering the survey and will compile results. Reports will only include overall findings, not individual responses.

Attendance

  • Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
    • This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.
  • Asiste a Clases Hoy Para Tener Éxito Mañana!
