Churchill Chatter - Issue 14, March 21, 2024

Dear Churchill Road Families,

What a rollercoaster the past few weeks have been.  We’ve gone from summer to winter to back to spring.  Just in time for Spring Break!

These past two weeks have been full of activities.  The PTA treated staff to a delicious array of Georgetown cupcakes.  Our 6th graders visited Philadelphia and were greeted with picture perfect weather for their historical walking tour.  Our first graders performed their musical, “How Does Your Garden Grow?” to an enthusiastic audience.  And, our third graders learned about simple machines on their visit to Colvin Run Mill.

We have loved seeing all the parent volunteers in the building.  From guest readers and field trip chaperones to cafeteria helpers and Helping Hungry Kids, we can’t thank you enough. We included some pictures this week of some of our parent volunteers!  We are so grateful for each and every parent who supports us!  We really want to focus on having each and every parent in our building volunteer next year!  Look for more information regarding this in the next couple of months!

We are planning our final round of grade level Community Conversations beginning the week after Spring Break.  Please see below for dates and details.

We hope you and your families enjoy a wonderful spring break.  We look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Wednesday, April 3!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr and Ms. Jen Niccolls

Planting Seeds in the STEAM Lab

planting

We are so fortunate to have a beautiful campus with so many garden beds. As the weather warms up, we are looking forward to planting many vegetables in our garden. 1st grade had a hands-on learning experience in the STEAM lab by planting seeds and witnessing the miraculous growth of various vegetables such as broccoli, peas, beets, and radishes. It has been truly captivating for them to observe the different stages of plant development, from tiny seeds to vibrant sprouts. In addition to traditional gardening, we are also incorporating a hydroponics tower garden, which will allow our students to explore the fascinating world of growing various lettuces and herbs in a soil-free environment. Each grade level will be participating in this enriched academic experience of planting and harvesting to instill in them a deep appreciation for nature, healthy eating, and sustainability. By actively participating in the garden project, our students will develop valuable skills in teamwork, responsibility, and patience. Stay tuned to see how our garden is growing and for opportunities through the PTA to water, weed, and harvest our garden after Spring Break and throughout the summer.

Character Strengths Focus

The next character strength our school community is focusing on is Fairness.

Fairness - You believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.
