spring checklist

See below for a few time management tips to help you and your family capitalize on daylight savings time!

Dear CRES Community,

The shift to daylight savings time often brings about changes in our daily routines and internal body clocks, which can affect children in various ways. Here are a few key points to consider:

  1. Sleep Patterns: The time change can disrupt your child's sleep patterns, leading to difficulty falling asleep or waking up earlier than usual. It's important to be patient and understanding during this transition period as their bodies adjust to the new schedule.

  2. Energy Levels: With the onset of longer daylight hours, your child may experience changes in their energy levels throughout the day. Some may feel more energized and alert, while others may need more time to adapt to the shift.

  3. Emotional Well-being: Changes in sleep patterns and daily routines can also impact your child's emotional well-being. They may feel more irritable or tired than usual as they acclimate to the time change.

To support your child during this transition, here are a few practical strategies you can implement at home:

  • Establish Consistent Bedtime Routines: Help your child maintain consistent bedtime routines to promote healthy sleep habits. Encourage relaxation activities before bedtime, such as reading or listening to calming music.

  • Encourage Physical Activity: Engage your child in physical activities during the day to help them expend excess energy and promote better sleep at night.

  • Monitor Screen Time: Limit your child's exposure to screens, particularly in the evening, as the blue light emitted by electronic devices can disrupt sleep patterns.

By being mindful of the impact of daylight savings time on your child and implementing these strategies, you can support your child's overall well-being.

We look forward to seeing all students well-rested and ready for school this week!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

📊FCPS Budget

Did you know Virginia provides less funding per student than many neighboring states including Maryland, Kentucky, and West Virginia? This is about $1,900 per student in state underfunding of Virginia’s students and $345 million for FCPS.

In July 2023, results were released from a study that was requested by the Virginia General Assembly to understand the costs of education in Virginia and the Standards of Quality funding formula.

This Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) study revealed that on average, school districts in other states get 14% more funding per student than in Virginia, even after considering the differences in labor costs between states. This means that localities (like Fairfax County) go above and beyond in local funding to make up for state funding shortfalls.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are [designated areas within a school or on school premises] for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources
