 Read Across America Week
Sangster will celebrate Read Across America week March 4th through March 8th. Students and staff are invited to show their spirit Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with special dress up days. Tuesday is a holiday for students and Ms. Oden would love for students to still participate at home by using the choice board above and having fun reading at home!
 Multicultural Night
Join us for our first ever Family Cultural Night on March 13, 2024, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm! Celebrate the unique heritages, rich cultures, and traditions of our Sangster families. In preparation for Family Cultural Night, all students are invited to create a paper doll dressed in clothing of their family’s cultural heritage (Paper Doll PDF).
Families are also invited to share their culture on the evening of March 13th by signing up to create a display with bite-sized food samples and/or participating in a student fashion show. More information to follow with the schedule and logistics for the evening including the fashion show. We hope to see you there!

It's that time of year again - our fabulous Sangster theatre students are putting on a show! This year it's Willy Wonka Jr! Get your tickets early, these shows often sell out quickly. Use this link to purchase tickets here.
Look for the Family Engagement Survey!
FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey will open Sunday, March 3. Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.
Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.
The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!
Look for Principal Evaluation Form!
On Monday, March 18, Sangster Elementary School’s parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.
The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

Purple Up - Month of the Military Child
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is gearing up to honor and celebrate its military-connected youth in April, the Month of the Military Child and on Purple Up! Day!
This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 17. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.
FCPS Purple Up! t-shirts are available for purchase now through Friday, March 8, 2024 here. The shirts highlight our gratitude and appreciation for our 14,000 military-connected students and their families. #PurpleUpFCPS!

Friendly Reminders!
 🤒 Students Sent Home from the Health Room
After being seen by the PHN or SHA in the Health Room, students sent home, due to a fever of 100.4 or greater and/or COVID-19 respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose), may return to school when the student is fever-free without fever reducing medication for at least 24 hours and symptoms have improved.

🛑 No U-Turns!
U-Turns on Reservation Dr. are both illegal and very, very dangerous. We continue to get reports of cars making these illegal U-Turns. The safety of our school community is compromised every time someone does this. Please take the time to use Kiss-n-Ride and/or find another route to get back up to the Parkway. Thank you!
📋 Check-Ins
Please remember, if your child arrives after 9:10AM, you must escort them into the main office and sign them in.
Students are not admitted into the building until 8:45AM. Unless, you have something prearranged with a teacher, your child attends SACC or a before-school club, please do not drop your student off at school any earlier, there will be no adult supervision available.
🚪Check-Outs
Please remember you must sign your student out in the main office. All student exchanges and contact must go through the office. You will need to sign them out on the "pink sheet" located in the office. Be prepared to show your photo ID when you arrive. The office works efficiently to retrieve students from wherever they are in building, so please arrive early enough to give staff enough time to locate your student so you can arrive at your next destination on time. The front office will not call for students prior to parents arrival for pickup. Thanks for your cooperation in making sure our student population is safe while at school!

Attendance matters!
We want you to keep your child home when they are sick, however, we ask that you please refrain from scheduling trips and other non-essential travel during the school week.

Please remember to email or call the attendance line with any messages regarding your student's attendance. Absences and late arrivals should be reported to avoid getting a robo-call from FCPS. If you email the teacher to let them know about your student's attendance, please copy SangsterElem.Attendance@fcps.edu to ensure your message reaches our attendance staff. You can also call, 703-644-8282 to report any attendance messages.
 This year, Ramadan begins on Sunday, March 10th. Ramadan is marked by personal and community prayer as well as fasting from dawn to sunset. If your child will be fasting, please let your child’s teacher know. We will be offering a space for students to go instead of the cafeteria if they plan to fast and want to be prepared. Thank you!

Save the Dates
April 3rd - Irving will host a Transition to Middle School parent night led by principal Cindy Conley. She will discuss how best to support your child as they transition to middle school. Time TBD
August 5th, 6th or 7th (select one), 8:00 am – 12:30 pm - Irving will offer Irving Academy (one day per student) to give students a “jump start” into middle school. Information about registering for this program will be sent out in early June.

Lake Braddock is offering a virtual Curriculum Fair! Parents and students can go to the LBSS Curriculum Fair Site to learn more about the courses we offer. The site includes a synchronous parent presentation, course descriptions, videos and Padlets for questions organized by department.

A Message From Irving Middle School
Although we are not yet to the middle of this school year, we are already beginning the registration process for next school year. Over the next few months, we will host various activities to help transition your child to Irving Middle School. If you have any questions throughout the process, please feel free to call the school. Below are important dates regarding the selection of your child’s classes for next year:

February/March/April/May - Elementary teachers and Irving staff review course requests. If there is a concern that a class might be too easy or difficult, a staff member will reach out to parents/guardians to discuss it.

April 3 - Transition to Middle School - Our principal, Cindy Conley, will discuss how best to support your child as they transition to middle school.

Late May/June - Mock schedules will be mailed home. These show the classes registered for, but not the actual schedule.

June 7 - Last day for schedule change requests.

Summer review by Irving for support class placement

August 5-7: Irving Academy is a transition program designed to give students a “jump start” into middle school. The program equips students with some of the skills they need to be successful in middle school, as well as gives them an opportunity to meet peers and ask questions about Irving. Enrollment is open to all WIMS rising 7th graders. Transportation is not provided, but lunch will be provided for all participants. Students will attend a one-day in-person program on EITHER August 5th, August 6th OR August 7th from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. Information about registering will be sent in early June, but we want to provide the date range to you for planning purposes.
Our course catalog is an additional resource to help with the course selection process. Elective teachers have included videos of the course to provide more information about what happens in their classes. When you choose a specific class, there is a description of the class and the link to the video is at the bottom of the description. Our catalog can be found here:

 Positivity Project - Week of March 4
Our Positivity Project focus for this week is the Other People Mindset with an emphasis on identifying and appreciating the good in others. Those who demonstrate this mindset work hard to identify and value others’ strengths. Ask your student to share what they have learned about their strengths this year.
The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).
Next Week’s Character Strength: We will review the character strengths we have learned so far this year.

The Family Resource Center offers free, confidential consultations by videoconference and phone for families and FCPS staff.
FRC professionals have extensive knowledge, training, and experience. They can brainstorm strategies and possible solutions to help you address your concerns. They can draw upon resources and support from FCPS, as well as community, state, and national centers.

SIBSHOPS: An Exciting, In-person Workshop for Brothers and Sisters of Children with Special Needs!
The Sibshop workshops are for children in grades 2-6 enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools who have siblings with special needs to:
- Meet other siblings in a relaxed setting.
- Celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs.
- Share sibling experiences and receive peer support.
- Play games and have fun!
