Churchill Chatter - Issue 13, March 8, 2024

art show

Churchill Road students and staff enjoying their artwork at the 2024 Youth Art Show at the McLean Community Center.

Dear Churchill Road Families,

What started off as a rainy week has turned beautiful and sunny!  We even had our playground mulched this week!

This week was National School Social Work Week.  We are so grateful for our school social worker, Mr. Wes Smith.  He supports our students, families and staff (monthly staff yoga classes are a huge hit).

We have enjoyed the many parent and community friends’ guest readers who have shared their favorite books with students during Read Across America week.  Thank you parents so much for coming in to read in our classrooms.

Our 6th graders did a fabulous job presenting their inquiry projects to parents on Thursday evening.  We learned so much about the topics they chose to investigate. Next week is a full one for 6th grade students. They will be going on their annual field trip to Philadelphia and celebrating Pi Day with many math-related activities and a variety of pies!

As a reminder, our kindergarten orientation is coming up on May 1 from 9 - 10 a.m. Please share the word with any new neighbors or families of rising kindergarten students. Information about registration is also included in the message below.

We hope that you and your families enjoy a relaxing weekend.  Remember to “spring forward” on Sunday for the start of daylight savings time. Spring Break is only two weeks away!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr and Ms. Jen Niccolls

character counts

Character Strengths Focus

The next character strength our school community is focusing on is the Other People Mindset of Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others.

Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others -It’s important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others’ character strengths.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.

Family Engagement Survey - Participate Today!
Your Voice Matters!

Share your thoughts around important topics impacting your student’s success. By participating in the Family Engagement Survey, parents/caregivers are making their voices heard. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

Help us better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools. The survey is open through March 22, 2024.

TAKE THE SURVEY!

Visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information.

 Principal Feedback Form

On Monday, March 18, Churchill Road Elementary parents will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Kindergarten Orientation  Wednesday, May 1

New Date!  Kindergarten Orientation is May 1

We will hold an in-person Kindergarten Orientation for rising Kindergarten students and their parents on Wednesday, May 1 from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. (previously scheduled for Tuesday, April 30). Book Club for 6th Grade Parents

School Counselor, Mrs. Lunghi, is excited to host a book club for parents dedicated to supporting our current 6th graders as they prepare to transition to middle school.  Please join her in reading Middle School Superpowers by Phyllis Fagell, LCPC.  We will have a virtual and an in-person meeting to discuss the book in May.  Hope you can join!

Spring 2024 SOL Testing Dates

sols

Please see the chart above for Churchill Road Spring SOL testing dates.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing! We thank you, in advance.
