Ramadan
This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.
With the start of Ramadan next week, we want to let you know about a few things we are doing to help our students who observe:
- We have a number of teachers who are opening their classrooms during lunch periods for students who are fasting.
- We have a second space available for our Prayer/Meditation space. Students do need to submit an eHall Pass to utilize the space and sign in at the Main Office.

Spring Testing
The Spring Testing calendar is now available, with scheduling information on the Senior Survey, SOL and AP Testing. For full information about SOL testing, including laptop information, testing notifications, etc., please check out the SOL Schedule and General Information section of our website.
Lightspeed Classroom Management
As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:
- Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
- Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
- Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.
We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.
Student Attendance
This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

8th grade Students Integrated Reading and Writing SOL Component
Students taking the grade 8 SOL Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component has one non-fiction reading passage followed by 4-6 of multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage. We will be taking the IRW for 8th graders on April 4th during 2nd period advisory. Our make up date is scheduled for April 8th during advisory as well.
Parents/guardians may choose to refuse participation in the IRW component while still agreeing for their student to participate in the required SOL Reading test. The IRW component does not fulfill federal participation requirements nor influence school accountability calculations. Decisions about how IRW component results will be communicated to families and teachers this year is pending additional reporting details from the Virginia Department of Education.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our MS Test Coordinator, Maya Nardone.

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday
Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

April 8 Solar Eclipse Resources and Safety Reminders
A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024 and will be viewable, depending on weather, in the Fairfax County area. In our area, the eclipse will begin around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m. This timing overlaps with some dismissal times and it is crucial that schools reiterate the importance of safe viewing practices.
FCPS safety guidelines do not permit direct viewing of the sun even with protective eyewear and encourages indirect (projection) viewing, including solar boxes and pinhole projectors. A one-page document with safe viewing practices and how to make these devices with their students will be shared with science teachers K-12 via Schoology groups.
We again encourage schools to share the Solar Eclipse Resources FCPS website link with their communities to access resources that include safe viewing practices and a NASA link for the eclipse live stream. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
