Dear Willow Springs Families,

Today is International Women's Day. For more than a century, people around the world have made March 8th a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

To ALL of the girls and women in our school and community, we honor you today and everyday! Through your intelligence, grit, determination, and grace, we are all made better.

We wish all of our families a wonderful weekend filled with happiness and peace. Thank you for sending us your best every day! #WillowPride

March 11th is the first full day of Ramadan.

Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds.

Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their child's principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Engagement Survey

FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey is now open. Survey partner K12 Insight emailed a link to families on March 3 and again on March 6.

Please participate! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS practices to best support our students.

Please check your email for the survey invitation or use this survey link. Get more information on the Family Engagement Survey webpage

🧘Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has created a regulation to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. Regulation 1502: Expectations for Meditation and Silent Reflection Space Accommodations provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are designated areas within a school or on school premises for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. View Regulation 1502 for more information.

Happy Read Across America Week!

Laura Murray Author Visit

Mrs. Murray talked with kindergarteners about how she creates her gingerbread man book series.  Students loved learning about how to take ideas and turn them into stories.

Bookmarks

Bookmark Design Contest

We had over 70 entries in our bookmark design contest. There so many wonderful bookmarks that we decided to print them all and distribute them during weekly library checkout. All designs are also in display in the library.

Students participated in "book tastings" during Read Across America week.

Read Across America-Book Tastings

In honor of Read Across America week, students had book tastings during their library specials.  Students had the opportunity to try out different books that they might not normally pick for themselves.

SOL Testing Dates

Every spring, students across the state of Virginia in grades 3-12 take Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to assess their learning. Elementary school students take reading and math tests starting in 3rd grade and continuing every year through 6th grade. In addition, 5th grade students take a science test. The expectation from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is that all students in grades 3-12 will participate in SOL testing every spring. Testing begins in May and is completed in June.
