We are excited to partner with our wonderful PTA to host a the WHES Carnival during the students’ special time on Tuesday, March 19th.  The students have earned this special activity because of their contributions to making our school a positive and safe learning environment.  Please contact the PTA, or Mr. Davis, our Assistant Principal if you would like to volunteer (bdavis1@fcps.edu.)

Thank you to Sally Rahnama and Karen Morris,! We truly appreciate everything you do to support our entire WHES family! Your time, energy, and efforts do not go unnoticed. Both of you adds so much value to our school and to each person you connect with throughout the day. Your words of wisdom, hugs, and willingness to listen have helped so many family members pull through challenging times. Our family is so much better because of each of you.
We wish we could do more, but we hope you felt our love and respect with each card, note, poster, and treat you received this week. We hope you had a wonderful week!

Many of our family members will be observing Ramadan beginning at sunset on March10 until April 9.  The first full day of Ramadan is March 11th. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, Islam's sacred text, to Mohammed, on a night known as "The Night of Power." During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline—of deep contemplation of one's relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran.

Please share if your child will be fasting as we will have a designated space available to students so they do not have to stay in the cafeteria during lunch.  Please provide your child with guidance on how they are to spend their lunch time, whether it be reflection, writing, reading, etc.  If you or your child would like to pray Dhuhr, please contact the office so that we can discuss arrangements.  Ramadan Mubarak!

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
