Dear Dogwood Dragons,

This week is Read Around the World Week. Frederick Douglass said “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” It is important that schools and parents partner together to teach our children how important it is to read. As we celebrate Read Around the World Week, we invite you to share a book or two with your child at school on Friday. It is a wonderful opportunity to partner with Dogwood in educating your child. The schedules are posted below.

I will be away from the office from March 18th, until April 1st. I will be traveling to Guatemala to take intensive Spanish classes, so that I can communicate more effectively with Dogwood’s students and families. If you need assistance during this time, please reach out to the office and speak with one of the assistant principals, Kim Seck, Daphne Holliday or Sanaz Hosseini. I look forward to practicing my Spanish with you upon my return!

With much appreciation for all of your partnership,

Kate Beckner, Proud Principal

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Our AMAZING school social worker is Ms. Alicia Pitarque Heishman! She supports students and families at Dogwood. Her impact on our school community is immeasurable, and we want to express our deepest gratitude for her incredible dedication to the well-being and success of all of her students.

Read Across the World

Help us celebrate…

Read Around the World Week!

You’re invited to come read with your child in their classroom on Friday, March 8. See the chart above to check the time to join your child in their classroom. Feel free to bring in one of your favorite children’s books or have your child choose one from the classroom library.

Leading up to that day we will also have a spirit week! Check out our flyer above. Reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring on May 2nd 4:30-6:00 pm. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Testing Calendar

Standards of Learning 2024 - Grades 3-6th

As we approach the month of May we want families to have the tentative dates for our Standards of Learning Assessments that pertain to grade 3rd-6th. If any changes are made to the date this information will be communicated to families as soon as possible. Please do all that you can to avoid any non-emergency time off during the SOL testing dates. We are publishing the dates early so we can all plan accordingly!

Ramadan Begins on March 11

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to connect Principal Kate Beckner regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.
