Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

pic

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Principal's Message

Good evening, KJMS Community,

Spring has ceremonially sprung with the time change this weekend! Please remember if you are dropping off your student in the morning via Kiss & Ride K&R), it will be back to a dark drop-off. Do NOT allow your student to exit your car in the parking lot, but only in front of the school once directed. Thank you for keeping all of our Eagles safe.

This week, we have been busy partnering with Providence Elementary School (PES). On Monday, we sent guest readers for Read Across America. This included myself, Ms. Teague, Ms. Betten (one of our librarians), and the most beloved guest–Lady Bart. Remember Lord Bart, our library’s bearded dragon? We found out this week that it is a she! And she was the biggest hit on Monday at PES. On Friday, Mr. Stowers and his advanced theater students were all the rage with their fairy tales they performed. These fairy tales were inspired by writings from 3 third grade Panthers who worked on a fairy tale writing unit. What a fun day!

Music is in the air. All of our band, orchestra and choral students have been representing KJMS well with school and local performances and assessments. Enjoy the pics below of a few orchestra students performing at Eagle View Elementary School this past week.

Finally, all of our 8th graders showed excellent SOAR traits as they visited Junior Achievement’s Finance Park. According to their website, “JA Finance Park is an innovation in experiential education designed to engage middle school students for life and work in the real world. And that means learning and practicing how to make informed decisions for lifelong success by:

  • ~Aligning the realities of life – and personal choices – with financial stability
  • ~Connecting education and career decisions with income expectations
  • ~Experiencing first-hand what it takes to make it

JA Finance Park is a public/private nonprofit collaboration between our region’s school systems, businesses, educators and volunteer mentors who come together to inspire, guide and teach students how to be financially capable and ready to take on their futures. From goal-setting to saving, budgeting, shopping and bill paying, students experience what it really takes to successfully navigate today’s complex economy and they come face-to-face with how their decisions today can impact their future.

JA Finance Park combines classroom curriculum taught by teachers with a high-impact simulation. This knowledge serves as a foundation in personal finance education and gives young people the skills they need to be successful and support them in their lifelong journey.”

Parents, ask your student what they learned about budgeting. We also challenged them to thank their parents for all of the investment they made in providing for them each and every day. It was a wonderful experience!

Have fun turning those clocks forward,

Dr. Silipigni,

Principal

Ramadan

Ramadan graphic

Next week, Ramadan, the holiest month on the Islamic calendar, begins at sundown on March 10 and ends around April 10, 2024. We want our KJMS families and students to know that the KJMS school library will be open during all lunches for students who may prefer to go to the library instead of the cafeteria, as many will be fasting. The library will also be available to students who may want to perform their prayers during the school day. If students elect to pray during the school day, they will need your permission to participate in this student-led, voluntary activity. Pease use the link below to access the permission form or paper copy versions can be pick-up in the main office. Completed and signed permission forms must be returned to Ms. Jama in the main office.

First Annual KJMS Spelling Bee

The first annual KJMS Spelling Bee took place after school on Thursday, March 7th, with 11 students competing. Mrs. Verma was the sponsor, working alongside parent coach Dr. Vrushali Gosavi. Students spent months practicing, and it showed! The competition was fierce and lasted about 90 minutes. Ultimately, Ameya Rajeev won the competition by successfully spelling “lymphoma.” Our runner up was Lila Gearhart, although Sammy Aggarwal put up a good fight before taking 3rd place. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to all of our competitors!

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.
