Student Attendance Reminders

Parents are encouraged to provide a minimum of 2 hours notification for early releases, last minute requests may delay early dismissals. Any student leaving school without checking out through the attendance office will be marked UNV. Parents can pick-up their children outside of Door 1.

Please keep in mind that Chronic Absenteeism is a new criterion for our school's accreditation. Last year we were "in warning" due to having a high number of students missing 10% or more of the school year. This means that every absence matters. Please encourage your student to attend school on days listed in the calendar. We appreciate everyone's support as we continue working toward the same goals.

Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings, SoCo Family!

I’m happy to share notes about two of our largest and most involved events of the year: International Night and the State DECA competition. First, International Night was last Saturday, March 2. Community members often discuss the wide array of cultures that feed into our school, and if you were fortunate enough to attend either of last week’s sold-out events, you’ll know just how true that statement is! From beginning to end, the nearly three-hour show was an amazingly beautiful collection of cultures from around the world. Here is just a sample of our students from that night. For anyone interested in seeing some of the videos, especially of the dragons (yes, dragons!) or cultural dancing, let me know and I’ll do my best to share them from my device to yours.

Our school also had a very successful showing at the State DECA competition last weekend. We had 11 students qualify, including one team placing First Place in Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making and another group placing Third in Integrated Marketing plan.

Lastly, earlier this week, we received news that our Social Studies Department Chair, Mr. Sean Miller, was included by the local press featuring the importance of celebrating Black History Month. We are very proud of everyone’s participation in our events last month, and Mr. Miller did a great job of representing all of SoCo in this feature. Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

Hello families,

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 9 through 12 during the week of (03/08/2024-03/14/2024). Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College

On March 20th @ 6 PM, the College Funding Coach® will present their Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College workshop.

With the cost of college so high, parents can simply no longer wait until their student is in high school to start efficiently planning for the cost of college. As most parents are realizing, if they wait until their child is in high school to start saving for college, it’s the equivalent of waiting three years before retirement to start putting money aside for their golden years.

The College Funding Coach® is here to help families figure out HOW to pay for it and still retire one day. You'll discover strategies that may enable you to qualify for financial aid, sources for scholarships, and strategies for maximizing your wealth and minimizing your tax exposure, giving you greater cash flow for funding a college education.

Please join us on March 20th @ 6 PM. This is information you can't afford to miss! To reserve your seat, please Register Here. I've attached a flyer about The College Funding Coach webinar.

AWARENESS

WOMENS MONTH

National Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

Equity in Education Month

FCPS — in conjunction with the Virginia School Boards Association — observes March as Equity in Education Month, a division-wide opportunity to deepen our commitment to creating a climate and curriculum where all students receive the resources they need to reach their fullest potential.

Disability Awareness Month

In March people throughout the United States will celebrate Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. Both histories are foundational parts of American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of this history year-round, and the celebration of Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness month are opportunities to honor these diverse and important stories. Resources for Women's History Month and Disability Awareness Month are available for teachers across content areas as part of the FCPS Multiple Perspectives Hub. Teachers and school leaders will find ideas for classroom learning experiences across content areas and grade levels. Resources curated specifically for the social studies curriculum are also available on the Women's History 180 document and Disability Awareness 180 document.

CELEBRATING

The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including:

  • Problem solving
  • Creativity
  • Observation
  • Communication

Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.

March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) is a celebration of theatre in our schools and schools in our theatres. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the goals of TIOS are to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students. While TIOS presentations and advocacy may happen anytime in schools, theatres, and other public spaces, AATE and EdTA will recognize and promote March as the official Theatre In Our Schools month.

National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
