March is Women's History Month

Women's History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional workdays.

Musicians needed for Literacy Night!

Calling all Young Musicians!

We are looking for young musicians for Navy's first ever Literacy Night.  There will be various activities involving literacy at Literacy Night you can complete with your family.  One activity is connecting music and literacy.

Your student is invited to perform a solo of their choice on any instrument.  While they are performing, there will be a short paragraph explaining what their song is, or who composed their song, that the audience can read.  Please work with your family to complete the writing prompt.

If your student is interested in performing, please complete this form.  We ask that performers be in grades 3-6.

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. We are lucky to have the Beth Holzman as our social worker at Navy! She is a wonderful support to our students and families! Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

The Fairfax County Conservation Poster Contest

Forest

The Fairfax County Conservation Poster Contest is an exciting opportunity for k-12th grade students to learn about the importance of soil and water conservation through art. By creating posters that showcase the beauty of nature and the significance of protecting our environment, students can express their creativity while also spreading awareness about conservation. Participating in this contest not only allows students to develop their artistic skills, but also teaches them valuable lessons about sustainability and taking care of our planet for future generations.

Daylight Saving Begins March 10 (Spring Forward)

daylight savings

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Ramadan Begins March 11

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2023-24 school year calendar.

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

FamilyEngagement

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!
