Attendance Matters
Did you know that:
- Regular attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
- Students who attend 90% or more of school are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
- According to research, students who graduate from high school can earn more money which can lead to better living conditions, better health, and increased access to medical services.
- It doesn’t matter whether the absences are excused or not, chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement.
- Starting in Kindergarten, missing 10 percent can make it harder to learn to read.
- According to research, irregular attendance can predict high school dropout, less job opportunities, and diminished health.
BMP is hosting a Career Day on June 6th from 2:15 - 3:30 and we are looking for presenters! On Career Day, presenters will share information with our grades 3-5 students about their careers. Our goal is to have a variety of fields represented in order to give students an opportunity to envision themselves in different professions.
Presenters will share in three, 20-minute rotations:
- training requirements of their occupation
- satisfactions and dissatisfactions of their job
- school skills used in their job
- what a typical day might include
- related jobs to their career field
- anything else that they feel students might be interested in!
If you are interested in presenting, please fill out this google form or email Kristin Feathers at kmfeathers@fcps.edu.

Bren Mar Park artists have been showing their creativity all winter long. Our kindergarten artists have just finished a weaving unit…they know a lot about patterns, so they were true pros! First grade artists are wrapping up family portraits in which they are showing who is in their family and trying to add details to give us clues about the people. Second grade artists are finishing up an animal painting project and are VERY excited to start clay this week! Third grade has just completed their clay food sculptures. They looked at how different artists have created food sculptures and created clay sculptures of their favorite food and accessories. Fourth grade artists are in the midst of a very entertaining “future self-portrait” project. It is so fun to see how they envision their life in the future! Fifth grade is learning about contour line drawings and how to LOOK and draw what they see in a slow and careful way (goodbye corner sun). Our multi-age class has done some printmaking and is doing some painting to use for a later collage. All of our children are doing an excellent job and I am amazed at their awesome ideas each and every day. Also, we have some budding comedians in our midst and I certainly love that! What amazing kids we have here at BMP!
We are beginning our textiles units soon after spring break for grades 3-5 so any yarn donations will definitely get used. If you had intentions to do crochet or knitting and were derailed by other things, please know that we can use the yarn in the art room!
Brian Rubenking, PAC IA
The 2023-2024 school year will be my fifth year at BMP as a PAC IA. I spent most of my career in the corporate world. After getting unexpectedly laid off a few years ago I decided to try something new. I worked as a long-term sub in a PAC classroom at another school and loved it. I then found my true home at BMP. I love working with the kids and seeing their skills develop and grow.
I am married with two adult children and live in Burke. I enjoy reading, watching TV shows and movies, listening to music, playing the banjo, and spending time with family and friends. I am a Northern Virginia native. I’m currently learning Spanish on Duolingo. My learning streak is over 500 days!
