A Note from Mr. Gates

I hope this message finds you all well and enjoying the first weekend of March! The past week has been bustling with activities and events, and I'm thrilled to share some updates and reminders with you:

  • No School Reminder: A quick heads-up that there will be no classes on Tuesday, March 5th, due to the primary election. Enjoy the day off!
  • Multicultural Fair: Our eagerly anticipated Multicultural Fair is just around the corner on Saturday, March 9th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We're excited about the lineup of student performances scheduled for the day. If you haven't already, there's still time to participate by showcasing your culture through displays or joining the Cultural Fashion Show. We can't wait to see the vibrant diversity of our school community on display! See below for additional information.
  • Read Across America Week: This week, we're celebrating Read Across America with a series of engaging daily activities. Please see below for more details on the exciting literary adventures planned for our students.
  • Lobby Mural Update: I'm delighted to announce that work on our lobby mural began last week! This mural will be a beautiful celebration of our school's diverse community and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. I'd like to extend a special thank you to the generous anonymous donors whose contributions made this project possible.

Thank you all for your unwavering support of Hollin Meadows. Let's make this week a fantastic one!

Sincerely,

Jon Gates

Principal

Calendar Reminder

Reminder: Tuesday, March 5 is a holiday for students

School will be closed on Tuesday, March 5 for all students due to Virginia primary elections.

March is Reading Month!

Throughout the month of March, Hollin Meadows students and staff celebrate March Reading Month with several activities. Our annual Book Parade will be on Friday March 22. Students and staff carry a copy of a book they’ve read or has been read to them.  All classes will parade inside the school so that others can see the book that is being shared. The main idea of the parade is to celebrate reading and books. Wearing accessories to complement the book choice is optional. More information will be sent home in Tuesday folders on March 12.

Throughout the month, students can have or share a photo of themselves and a book for our Shelfie Selfie activity. These closeup photos of the student will include a book whose cover/title shows the student’s name or describes them.  For example, there is an author named Kathy Tucker (not me😊) whose name is on the cover of her book. I took a Shelfie Selfie of me holding that book.  These photos will be displayed in the library.  As I come across library titles that reflect a student, I’ll take a photo of them holding the book. If you have a book at home that fits this activity, you can take the photo and send to me at kdtucker@fcps.edu. Please place in subject line Shelfie Selfie and your child’s first name. Horizontal photos preferred 😊.

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.
