The Mustang Weekly Newsletter

Greetings McNair Students and Families,

Another great week of learning and fun is in the books at McNair!  As we look forward to the upcoming week, we will be celebrating our LOVE for LITERACY in honor of Read Across America Week!  We encourage all students and staff to show their spirit and participate in the various activities we have planned to commemorate this special week. More details can be found in this newsletter.  We cannot wait to see your spirit, Mustangs!

In addition, we have a couple of friendly reminders. Tomorrow, Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey from an independent research firm, K12 Insight. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we invite you to participate in our Family Engagement Survey. Your feedback is invaluable to us in enhancing the learning experiences for our students.

Additionally, on Tuesday, March 5th there will be no school for our students due to the Presidential Primary Elections. Furthermore, please be sure to mark your calendars for the PTA Movie Night this upcoming Friday at 6:00pm. Don't forget to RSVP!

We are looking forward to another fantastic week ahead of learning and growing together! See you on Monday, Mustangs!

🗓️Attendance Matters

a

🙋Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to the school. If you are unsure how to report an absence, please call the main office at 703-793-2800..

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

✅ Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

f

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

d

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring during [March or April]. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. Learn more about Equitable Access to Literacy in this video.

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Our AMAZING school social worker is Dena Neverdon! She supports students and families at both McNair Elementary School as well as McNair Upper Elementary School.  Her impact on our school community is immeasurable, and we want to express our deepest gratitude for her incredible dedication to the well-being and success of all of our students.

We are hopeful that students and families this week will take a moment to share their appreciation with Ms. Neverdon by writing her a letter or drawing her a picture.  Your kind words and encouragement will undoubtedly mean a lot!!

Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.
