1. March 5 Presidential Primary — Student Holiday/School Planning Day

The Fairfax Board of Elections requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election. March 5 will be a holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day for teachers.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. See the employee calendar and the school year calendar.

2. March 10th Daylight Saving Time Begins

Daylight Savings

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

As a result of the time change, some students may be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

3. SOL Spring Schedule

Please see below for the spring SOL schedule.  A passing score is anything between 400-600. Any student who does not pass the SOL and scores in the range of 375-399 will have the opportunity to retake the Math, Reading, and Science SOL.  Retakes will be held from May 28th to 31st.  If you do not want your child to retake an SOL, please reach out to your teacher via email to let them know.

4. The Positivity Project

Positivity

Weekly character strength for March 4 - 11: Fairness

Fairness

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgment — the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

For individuals, cultivating the character strength of fairness is correlated with highly desirable developmental outcomes. It helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

16. Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.
