KJMS Parent Conversation & Coffee Update

Dear KJMS Families,

FCPS is very focused on how we can support attendance. Schools across the county are looking for ways to reduce chronic absenteeism. Thankfully, KJMS has been able to reduce its absenteeism rates this school year, but we are always looking for ways to help support attendance. First it is important to know when to keep your student(s) home and when to send them to school. Illness with a physical symptom – fever, vomiting, diarrhea – are signs your student should stay at home. Read: Attendance: When Should I Keep My Child Home?

For other situations, saying they don’t feel well can be a sign of a different issue that is causing students to avoid school. Students who are struggling with depression or anxiety, students who lack positive peer connections, and students who feel academic pressure sometimes avoid school. Missing 1 day or less a month is a good goal for most students. Chronic absenteeism can negatively impact students' grades, limit the development of social and emotional skills, and impact future school attendance. KJMS is eager to partner with families to support attendance.

During this past week, at our “Coffee & Conversations” event, we talked about chronic absenteeism, its roots, and some solutions to get our kids back in the classroom. We had many support partners present to share resources with families.

Our partners support mental health, physical health, transportation needs, and offer parenting resources that are affordable or free to our community members. FCPS Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! Webpage.

We are very thankful to those parents that came to the Attendance Coffee & Conversations. They offered many perspectives and suggestions and were able to answer a variety of questions and provided support in many areas of need.

If your child is struggling to come to school, misses more than one day a month, or seems to have a lot of physical symptoms that are keeping them out of school, please call us so we can discuss some strategies and provide resources to help support attendance. Our goal is that all students and families feel healthy, happy, and connected to school.

Enjoy your weekend!

Dean of Students

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey

This Sunday

Family Engagement Banner

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

March 5 Presidential Primary

Calendar reminder graphic

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

Ramadan

Next week, Ramadan, the holiest month on the Islamic calendar, begins at sundown on March 10 and ends around April 10, 2024. We want our KJMS families and students to know that the KJMS school library will be open during all lunches for students who may prefer to go to the library instead of the cafeteria, as many will be fasting. The library will also be available to students who may want to perform their prayers during the school day. If students elect to pray during the school day, they will need your permission to participate in this student-led, voluntary activity. Pease use the link below to access the permission form or paper copy versions can be pick-up in the main office. Completed and signed permission forms must be returned to Ms. Jama in the main office.

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Daylight savings time graphic

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Opioid Conversation

Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.
