A Message from The Principal

Hi Ravensworth Families,

We had another wonderful week of learning.  Today our students started their day with Chua Martial Arts as part of a cultural arts assembly arranged by the Ravensworth PTA.  Our students enjoyed a demonstration of the Lion Dance performance which included percussion, movement, and martial arts.  The Lion Dance is a ritual in Chinese tradition believed to bring good fortune and happiness.  To learn more, visit www.chuamartialarts.com or search for Chua Martial Arts on social media.  Thank you to the Ravensworth PTA for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity.

Next week we’re excited to celebrate Read Across America.  Check out the schedule below for more information regarding our theme for each day.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Student and Family Surveys

Family Engagement Banner

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online

Author Visiting our Ravens

author visit

We’re excited to announce that award-winning author Wendy Wan-Long Shang  will be visiting our Ravens on Wednesday, March 20th!  Wendy has written a variety of books many of which are available for checkout in our library.

“As a child, books meant freedom. If you could read in my kindergarten class, you were allowed to go to the library by yourself, and libraries were the loveliest freedom I could imagine. If I had a book, I had a companion for a long dinner with grown-ups. I could learn about anything, go anywhere, pretend to be anyone.” (Wendy Wan-Long Shang)

Wendy lives in northern Virginia with her husband, children, a cat and a dog.

To learn more about Wendy Wan-Long Shang and her books, you can visit her webpage.  If you’re interested, there are signed copies of Wendy’s books available for purchase here.

PTA Open Board Position

pta get involved

The PTA is looking for someone willing to assume the role of Treasurer for the 2023-2024 school year. Unfortunately, our current Treasurer, Lane, is unable to continue in the position. While we will miss her in that role, it opens a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to get involved. The position includes:

  • Tracking and inputting incomes and expenses to QuickBooks
  • Creating Monthly Budget Reports and presenting them at Meetings
  • Writing checks and depositing payments received
  • Attending monthly meetings

The position demands anywhere between 2-5 hours of work per month. While an accounting background and QuickBooks experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

Anyone interested in the role can send an email to president@ravensworthpta.org. Further questions about the role may be sent to selemefamilia@gmail.org

Online Read-A-Thon
