Bush Hill Updates - Tuesday, March 5, 2024

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

At Bush Hill, we believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment where students are exposed to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Throughout the year, we celebrate and learn about various holidays and awareness months through various engaging activities.

Here are a few examples of how we incorporate inclusivity into our community:

  • Holidays: We acknowledge and celebrate major holidays observed by various cultures within our school community. This allows for cultural exchange and fosters respect for diverse traditions. We do this through activities like classroom discussions, cultural presentations led by students or families, and readings of diverse children's books.
  • Awareness Months: We also dedicate time to recognizing and learning about important awareness months. This allows us to raise awareness about different causes and social issues, fostering empathy and understanding among students. We might engage in activities like guest speakers, class projects related to the theme, or creating displays highlighting the month's significance.
  • Accommodations: Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact us regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction. Should your child need an accommodation related to a cultural holiday or observance, please be sure to reach out to your child's homeroom teacher and the main office.

It's important to note that our approach is always respectful and inclusive. We strive to present information objectively and create a space for open dialogue and learning. Additionally, we encourage families to share their own traditions and experiences with their children at home, further enriching their understanding of the world around them.

In February, we celebrated and learned about Black History Month and Lunar New Year. In March, we will celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Irish American Heritage Month, and Women's History Month. We will also learn about a variety of holidays to include Maha Shivrati, Ramadan, St. Patrick's Day, Nowruz, Purim, Holi, and Easter. This week, we are also celebrating Read Across America Week. March is a BUSY month at Bush Hill!

We believe that celebrating diversity is essential for fostering a strong and inclusive school community. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home and to let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. We also encourage you to participate in Bush Hill's Community Night. This is a great opportunity for families to share traditions and celebrations that are important to them! The event is Thursday, April 11th from 6:00 - 7:15.

Thank you for your continued support.

Dropoff and Pickup Assistance

The PTA is looking to assist our school by increasing adult presence during morning dropoff and afternoon pickup from the campus.  We will potentially model our efforts after the national program Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students), but adapted for our community.

Anyone interested in and available for this effort, please email ptabushhillelementary@gmail.com.

Health Room Reminder

Medications should be taken at home whenever possible so that the student will not lose valuable classroom time or have a shortened lunch period. Any medication taken in school or SACC must have a parent or guardian-signed authorization; some medications also require licensed prescriber's orders. Medication must be kept in the school health room or other school-approved location during the school day. The parent or guardian must transport medications to and from school, except a high school student may carry an over-the-counter medication to and from the school health room. Should your child need to take medication during the school day, please contact the Bush Hill Health Room at 703-924-5610 so that they can assist you with completing the appropriate paperwork.

March Is Women's History Month & Disability Awareness Month

Women’s History and Disability Awareness

In March, people throughout the United States celebrate Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. Both histories are foundational parts of American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of this history year-round. The celebration of Women’s History month and Disability Awareness month are opportunities to honor these diverse and important stories.

The Rose Hill Players Present "The Claw"

Join us ‘The Rose Hill Players’, from Rose Hill Elementary School, for our production of  THE CLAW.

Welcome to the Rose Hill Bowling Alley, specifically inside a CLAW MACHINE that has not been turned on in a long time. Our narrator, CLAW, introduces us to two best friends: a cow plush named DOT and a stuffed dragon named AIDEN. While AIDEN wishes they could leave the game, DOT loves being stuck inside, where things never change. Suddenly, all of the TOYS are tossed around inside the machine, as the claw game springs to life for the first time in ages! AIDEN is thrilled and determined to leave the game today. DOT, meanwhile, is terrified of facing the unknown. A trio of BEANIE ELDERS, eccentric FLAIR BEARS and tough MIGHTY MUTANT POWER TURTLES teach them how to embrace change & conquer the unknown, but is DOT ready? With things changing so quickly, can they manage to stay together? Or will they be separated forever?! Come join us and find out.

Performances will be held at Thomas A. Edison High School (5801 Franconia Rd. Alexandria) on Saturday, April 6th at 1pm and 6pm.  Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for children, $1 for children at the matinee.

Kindergarten SY 24-25

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Bush Hill will host a kindergarten orientation on Thursday, April 25th from 6 - 7 PM.  Eligible children register throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten.  Please contact our Registrar, Ms. DePalma with questions and to set up your Kindergarten Registration appointment (703) 924-5600.  For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Techstravaganza

ddf

Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology (TWIST), a student organization at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). Each year, we promote STEM through our annual flagship outreach event, Techstravaganza, and we would like to invite your school’s students to attend! Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 20th annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST. Admission is free, food will be for sale, and we hope that you can spread the word in your school. Here is our registration link: https://tinyurl.com/techstrav24
