It's been another exciting week at Bucknell Elementary School! As we step into March, we're already halfway through the third quarter. Time really does fly! Some of our students received interim reports this week to keep you in the loop about their progress. Remember, if you have any concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. Also, take a moment to chat with your kids about what they've been learning this week – you might be surprised by what they share! Just a heads up: next Tuesday, March 5th, school will be closed for the Presidential Primary elections. Have a fantastic weekend ahead, everyone!

March 5 - Presidential Primary - Student Holiday

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc. 

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

La Junta Electoral de Fairfax ha solicitado que las escuelas se cierren el martes 5 de marzo para acomodar la administración de las elecciones primarias presidenciales de 2024.

Por lo tanto, el 5 de marzo será un feriado escolar para los estudiantes y un  Día de Planificación Escolar virtual. Como se describe en  la Regulación 4421, los Días de Planificación Escolar son dirigidos por los administradores de la escuela para dedicar tiempo a los esfuerzos de mejora de la escuela, incluida la colaboración en torno a datos, evaluaciones comunes, instrucción receptiva, etc.

Tuesday, March 5 - SACC Open

Tuesday, March 5, 2024, is now a FCPS Teacher Workday. SACC will be open for the full day from 7 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. Children currently enrolled in Before and/or After School services may attend SACC for the full day.

Next week, an Anticipated Attendance Sheet will be posted in the center. In order to help center staff plan for the full day program, please use this sheet to indicate whether or not your child(ren) will be attending on Tuesday, March 5.

Please note, children will need to bring a lunch and drink from home, labeled with their name and the date, as the cafeteria will be closed.

El martes 5 de marzo de 2024 es ahora un día laboral para maestros de FCPS. SACC estará abierto todo el día de 7 a. m. a 6:15 p. m. Los niños actualmente inscritos en servicios antes y/o después de la escuela pueden asistir a SACC durante el día completo.

Playground Temporarily Closed 

On Wednesday, February 28^th Safety and Security conducted an audit and the inspector noticed that there were deep holes on the playground. Foxes were spotted on the playground, so we called the Office of Facilities Management, who sent a pest controller supervisor to inspect the situation. The Office of Facilities Management then gave us guidance for students to stay off the playground due to safety concerns, as the foxes have created a den.  At the direction of the Office of Facilities Management we closed and locked the playground as our pest controller supervisor plans to set traps.  The Office of Facilities Management will let us know when we can reopen the playground.  We have communicated with all staff members that students are to continue with outside recess using the blacktop, fields, etc. They were also informed that students are not allowed on the playground at this time. El miércoles 28 de febrero, Seguridad y Protección realizó una auditoría y el inspector notó que había agujeros profundos en el patio de recreo. Se vieron zorros en el patio de recreo, por lo que llamamos a la Oficina de Administración de Instalaciones, que envió a un supervisor de control de plagas para inspeccionar la situación. Read Across America Week

This week is Read Across America Week! We will be celebrating all
things literacy and holding a spirit week.

• Monday we will be wild about reading - so wear anything animal
  print or safari themed.
• Tuesday you will be at home - read comfortably in your house!
• Wednesday Score big with books - so wear a shirt to show your
  favorite sport.
• Thursday we will recognize that reading is the passport to
  adventure - so wear something from your favorite place in the
  world or somewhere you want to visit.
• Friday show that books are for Bulldogs with your Spirit Wear!

Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) Test for 5th-Grade Students

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our 5th-grade students will take the Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) Test on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. This assessment is a component of the Reading SOL Test and will be administered in person at the school.

In the event of any unavoidable conflicts that may lead to your student missing the testing day, please promptly notify Ms. Toler, Assistant Principal, to address the situation.

It's important to note that the Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) test does not fulfill verified credit or federal participation requirements. For more details, please visit the SOL assessments webpage at https://www.fcps.edu/node/35021.

Should you choose not to have your student participate in the Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) Test, you have the right to refuse testing. However, we encourage you to discuss this decision with school staff. The Right to Refuse Assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277) provides valuable information as you contemplate this choice.

In most cases, assessment results will be accessible in the Student Information System (SIS) ParentVUE approximately three months after testing. For any inquiries or concerns regarding the Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) testing, please contact Ms. Toler at Bucknell Elementary School.

Nuestros estudiantes de 5º grado tomarán el Examen Integrado de Lectura y Escritura (IRW) el miércoles 20 de marzo de 2024. Esta evaluación es un componente de la Prueba SOL de Lectura y se administrará en persona en la escuela.

ST March Mathness Challenge – March 4^th – March 22^nd

On Monday, March 4^th, students in Pre-K – 6^th grade will begin the ST March Mathness Challenge. Classes will compete against each other to see which class can complete more puzzles each week. The class that has the higher puzzle average per student will advance to the next round. The two classes that make it to the finals will have a choice of a pizza, popsicle, or popcorn party.  

El lunes 4 de marzo, los estudiantes de Pre-K a 6.° grado comenzarán el ST March Mathness Challenge. Las clases competirán entre sí para ver qué clase puede completar más rompecabezas cada semana. Family Math Night  - March 14^th – 5:30 – 7:00

Join us on March 14, 2024 for our annual Family Math Night and Pi Day Celebration. Pizza will be served from 5:30 – 6:00 in the cafeteria. Please enter through door 5. Once you have finished eating, please join us in the cafeteria for math games, chances to win pies during our pie walk, visit with Jiji from ST Math, and vote for a teacher to get a pie in the face!

West Potomac Pyramid Art Show

All schools in the West Potmac Pyramid will display selected works of art and will feature the artwork of Bucknell students. It is located Springsbank Art Center at West Potomac High School. The artwork will be on display from March 6th - 14th. There will be a reception on March 14th from 5 - 6:30 PM. Families are encouraged to come see all the artwork. There will be live music and DC Slices Food Truck.

What is POG POL?

Last week, we mentioned FCPS’ focus on Portrait of a Graduate, a collection of five important attributes: Communicator, Collaborator, Ethical & Global Citizen, Creative & Critical Thinker, and Goal-directed & Resilient Individual, that all people use to find success. 

Our goal with these skills is not only that students use the skills, but that they also have the ability to discuss and recognize their own growth and share, “I grew, I can prove it, and here’s why it matters.” This opportunity is referred to as Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning, or POG POL. During POG POL, students reflect on what they have done in school and have an opportunity to discuss how they grew, compare school work or evidence that shows their growth, and discuss why that growth is important to their lives, in the classroom today, and in the future. 

POG POL is an opportunity for students to:

• Reflect, share, and celebrate their learning throughout the year
• Discuss personal strengths and interests
• Share who they are, in their words
• Build relationships with teachers and peers
• Build awareness of themselves as learners
• Make connections to their lives beyond the classroom
• Celebrate successes and determined next steps for continued growth

These presentations can happen throughout the year.  We’re excited to hear how  students at Bucknell share how far they’ve come since the beginning of the year!

La semana pasada, mencionamos el enfoque de FCPS en Retrato de un Graduado, una colección de cinco atributos importantes: Comunicador, Colaborador, Ciudadano Ético y Global, Pensador Creativo y Crítico, e Individuo Resiliente y Dirigido a Objetivos, que todas las personas utilizan para encontrar el éxito.

Nuestro objetivo con estas habilidades no es solo que los estudiantes usen las habilidades, sino que también tengan la capacidad de discutir y reconocer su propio crecimiento y compartir: "Crecí, puedo probarlo y he aquí por qué es importante". Esta oportunidad se conoce como Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning, o POG POL. Durante POG POL, los estudiantes reflexionan sobre lo que han hecho en la escuela y tienen la oportunidad de discutir cómo crecieron, comparar el trabajo escolar o la evidencia que muestra su crecimiento, y discutir por qué ese crecimiento es importante para sus vidas, en el aula hoy y en el futuro. 

POG POL es una oportunidad para que los estudiantes:

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

La mayor parte de los fondos de FCPS se solicitan al gobierno del Condado de Fairfax, que genera sus ingresos a partir de impuestos sobre bienes raíces y propiedad personal. Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14. 

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.   

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Una conversación comunitaria que se dirige a la crisis de los opioides en el Norte de Virginia y las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Fairfax se llevará a cabo el miércoles 18 de marzo, de 6:30 a 8 p.m., en el auditorio de la Escuela Secundaria Lake Braddock. Por favor entre por la puerta #14.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact the principal, Rashida Green, regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school. 

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Purple Up! on April 17 to Support Military Families

Join our community and turn FCPS purple on Purple Up! Day, Wednesday, April 17. Wear purple in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students. 

Purple Up! T-shirts are available for purchase through Friday, March 8.

Equity in Education Month

FCPS — in conjunction with the Virginia School Boards Association — observes March as Equity in Education Month, a division-wide opportunity to deepen our commitment to creating a climate and curriculum where all students receive the resources they need to reach their fullest potential.

National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.

National School Social Work Week March 3-9

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Del 3 al 9 de Marzo es la Semana Nacional del Trabajador Social Escolar. Los trabajadores sociales en FCPS ayudan a prevenir los factores sociales, emocionales y de comportamiento que afectan la capacidad de un estudiante para rendir al máximo. National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) celebrates the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success.
