Principal's Message
Dear Crestwood Families,
Happy first day of March! We are halfway through the third quarter and we are looking forward to many exciting family events. Math Night is right around the corner so don't forget to RSVP! Monday, we will have an attendance surprise for all of our students.
Don't forget that Tuesday, March 5 is a student holiday. The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested for schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election. Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.
On a different note, the weather is beginning to show signs of warming up and our students are so ready to play soccer. We kindly ask that kids keep their cleats at home to reduce the risk of injuries. Kids know that cleats are not allowed at school.
Finally, I want to thank all the amazing guest readers who volunteered this week to read with our students. It was wonderful to see so many families partnering with the school to develop the joy of reading in our students. I look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday!

¡Feliz primer día de marzo! Estamos a la mitad del tercer trimestre y esperamos con ansias muchos eventos familiares emocionantes. No olvides que el martes 5 de marzo es feriado estudiantil. La Junta Electoral de Fairfax ha solicitado que las escuelas estén cerradas el martes 5 de marzo para dar cabida a la administración segura y eficiente de las elecciones primarias presidenciales de 2024. Por lo tanto, el 5 de marzo será un feriado escolar para los estudiantes y un Día de Planificación Escolar virtual. El SACC permanecerá abierto, como en otros días de trabajo profesional.
En una nota diferente, el clima está comenzando a mostrar signos de calentamiento y nuestros estudiantes están listos para jugar fútbol. Pedimos amablemente que los niños mantengan sus tacos en casa para reducir el riesgo de lesiones. Los niños saben que los tacos no están permitidos en la escuela.

Celebrating Black History Month
Crestwood was thrilled to honor Black History Month this past February, focusing on the 2024 theme, "African Americans and the Arts." Our students eagerly participated in a gallery walk, delving into the profound impacts of Black Americans on visual arts, music, and cultural movements. The walls of Crestwood echoed with the vibrant stories of creativity and resilience.
A special shout-out to Ms. Riggs, Ms. Roman, and the Black History Month committee for their dedication in making this celebration an enlightening experience for all. Let's continue to embrace and learn from the rich cultural tapestry that shaped our community!

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their student's teacher and the Crestwood office staff regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Attendance Matters
Every hour of every school day is a unique opportunity for students to learn, connect, and grow. Crestwood has a commitment to supporting students with being Here, Everyday, Ready to Learn and On Time (HERO). At Crestwood ES the majority of absences are: students who travel out of the country, students in the primary grades, weather related, families in need of resources and students who miss school before/after a holiday or on a long weekend. As an incentive, students who come to school on Monday, March 4th will receive a special surprise! Please reach out if your family needs support with attendance.

Cada hora de cada día escolar es una oportunidad única para que los estudiantes aprendan, se conecten y crezcan. Kindergarten Registration
🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!
Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring during March or April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.
Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.
🖍️ ¡Es El Momento de Inscribirse al Kindergarten!
Asistir al kindergarten les ofrece a los niños la oportunidad de aprender y practicar las habilidades sociales, emocionales, de resolución de problemas y de autorregulación que usarán durante toda su vida. Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3
FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:
- Welcoming environment
- Communication
- Student success
- Advocacy
- Family and school partnerships
- Community partnerships
The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.
💭 Share Your Thoughts on Schoology
FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:
- Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
- Secondary students via email from Naviance.
Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Opioid Conversation
🎤 Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs
A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.
All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.
Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.
