Parent Volunteers Needed!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

Varsity Boys Basketball:

The Cav boys' basketball team finished up a great season in the regional quarter final game against eventual region champ, Hayfield. Showing the grit they played with all season, the Cavs fought from down 18 to close the gap to eight points in the 4th quarter but the rally came up short and too many costly turnovers did the boys in.

Throughout the season, the team exhibited determination, mirroring their performance in this game. Their season stands as a testament to their perseverance and dedication. The entire community - fans, parents, and fellow students - extends heartfelt appreciation to the senior basketball players for their exemplary leadership and commitment during their tenure in the program.

As we bid farewell to these outstanding athletes - Sean Donovan, Bryce Donovan, Jordan Grabow, Luke Tryon, Owen Spurlock, and Ethan Conklin - we applaud their contributions and wish them success in all their future endeavors. The highs and lows of basketball have imparted invaluable life lessons that will endure beyond the court. Well done, boys and thank you!

Indoor Track:

Congratulations to our ladies who are Regional Championship runner-up. First time since 1992! The girls had an amazing two days and just about everyone scored in their event.

We had 3 Regional Champions; Keira Arenholz in the 1600m, Kendall Anderson in the 500m and Hadley Vanek in the 1000m with a new school record. Also, Barrett Pullen had a massive PR in the shot put and the girls 4x200m relay (Ashley Lofton, Emma Ishikawa, Grace Ewalt, Abby Ward) claimed a State Championship spot.

Girls Varsity Basketball:

What an exhilarating week it has been for the Varsity Girls Basketball program! The excitement continues as they prepare to compete in STATES on Tuesday against Manchester High School in Midlothian, VA.

On Tuesday evening, the Lady Cavs faced #1 seed Edison (17-0) in the Regional Quarterfinals to come away with a big win (53-46).  Woodson started out strong and while the game stayed close they led the entire game.

Up next, on Friday, Woodson went up against West Potomac in the Regional Semifinals and walked away with a big upset win over the Wolverines (51-44).  This win was especially sweet as they secured their spot in States and defeated the one team in the district that they had not had a win against this season.  The Lady Cavs would face the District Champs Robinson the following evening in the Regional Championship in the Rams home gym.

Saturday night was an evening to remember for the team - the stands were full, the energy high and Woodson came out fighting and their fight never stopped.  At halftime, Woodson led by 2, but ultimately fell short (49-38).  Despite the outcome, they came home with a well earned trophy as the Occoquan Region 6C Runner-Up, showcasing the resilience and spirit of this #5 seed that never gave up and that has earned the opportunity to compete in another game.  Wishing them the best of luck at States on Tuesday!

Woodson Girls Varsity Basketball Region Runner Up

Rifle:

Woodson Rifle Team

Woodson Rifle Team is the REGIONAL CHAMPION! In a postponed regionals match, Saturday the 24th, Woodson Rifle competed against all the region’s high school rifle teams and came out on top by more than 14 points! Representing Woodson were Ben Hays, Rushil Punukollu, Rachel Xu, Emma Cummings-S and Chloe Lee.  Rushil Punukollu received 3rd individual high score at regionals!

Woodson Rifle was also awarded the Conference Champion for the regular season. They were the only undefeated team in all the conferences, had the highest team score during the season, and the highest overall team average for the region! Ben Hays shot the highest individual score and had the highest individual average in the region during the season.

All-metro teams were also announced.  Each All-Metro Team consists of 6 athletes.  Ben Hays and Rushil Punukollu were named to the First Team.  Rachel Xu and Emma Cummings-S were named to the Second Team. Madelyn Bajo was awarded All-Metro Honorable Mention.

The rifle team would like to wish their Senior team members a fond farewell.  They will be missed but not forgotten: Ieva Balunis, Will Crivellaro, Ben Hays, Raymond Koerner, Abigail Lee, Hannah Lee, Eric Li, Sam Lingenfelter,  Rushil Punukollu, Permit Singh, Matthew Wang and Rachel Xu.

The team would like to thank their all-volunteer coaching staff: Head Coach Jay Cliff, Coach Burney, Coach Clark, Coach Dreyfus, Coach Frazier, Coach Hone, Coach Perri and Coach Terry.

GO CAVS!

Ice Hockey Club:

We are sad to report that despite a gallant effort by the team, the Woodson Ice Hockey team lost to Forest Park/Hylton in the Quarterfinal Round of the Capitals Scholastic Hockey League’s playoff. The final score was 8 to 4, but the actual game was much closer - which Woodson actually outplayed Forest Park/Hylton for most of the game! Woodson generated 40 shots on goal compared to Forest Park/Hylton’s 26. The differences in the game was that Forest Park/Hylton was more opportunistic - taking advantage of their high percentage scoring chances; and the Forest Park/Hylton goalie had an outstanding game - robbing Woodson of numerous goals.

Forest Park/Hylton jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead only to see the Cavs close the gap to 2 to 1. Forest Park/Hylton then extended their lead to 3 to 1, only to see the Cavs once again close the gap to 3 to 2…and you guessed it, Forest Park/Hylton regained a two goal lead only to see the Cavs reduce it to a one goal game with the score 4 to 3. This is how the third period started, with the Cavs having a lot of momentum and also on the Power Play. Unfortunately, the Cavs were not able to get the tying goal and a few minutes later Forest Park/Hylton scored a fluke goal that deflected off of a skate near the goal and crossed the line to regain a two goal lead with time ticking down. Woodson had to take some chances to try to get back in the game, but unfortunately the breaks did not go the Cavs’ way and Forest Park/Hylton took a commanding four goal lead that the Cavs could not overcome.

Rob Young scored a goal; Wyatt Borgeson picked up an assist; Shannon Force made some big hits and had a couple of near miss goals on shots from the point; and Carson Edington anchored the defense while also making some big hits and nice passes to close out his Woodson Ice Hockey career.

Even though the team lost the playoff game, the season was a huge success!  The team had a winning record, won a playoff game, established a JV team to help develop players, and also played multiple non-league games.  Next up for the team is the end of season Awards Banquet in April to recognize the many achievements of the players and coaches.

Additionally, Spring High School Hockey will start up toward the end of March.

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
