Weekly update for March 1, 2024
Dear CES friends and families:
As you can see above, earlier this week our Kindergarten students went on their first of two field trips this year. They had a wonderful time at the Hidden Oaks Nature Center where naturalists connected our Columbia Cougars with the nature center's natural and cultural resources, including live animals. Additionally, naturalists encouraged students to become environmental stewards of their community and helped us in achieving the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate goal to develop global citizens.
Next week we are hosting the 2024 Columbia Read-a-thon! Students will receive a form to track their reading minutes next week and prizes will be given for the upcoming spring book fair! Additionally, there will be a "Masked Reader" guessing game during the morning news and the library will be open on Monday and Thursday after school as we welcome parents and families to join in the fun.
In other news, we are happy to announce that after-school clubs are returning after spring break! Keep an eye out for registration information for spring club offerings at CES, including a couple of new clubs sponsored by the wonderful PTA. Stay tuned for more information soon!
This is a gentle reminder that we will not have school on Tuesday of next week, March 5th.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Take care,
Mike Astudillo

Volunteer opportunities for kids!
Raising Responsible Citizens, an Ignite Partner with FCPS, has plenty of volunteer projects this year and they are looking for more students to join.
Most of the projects scheduled are Park Clean-ups, Invasive Plant Removal, and nursing home activities where kids can visit the facility and do activities with the residents. There are also Dog Adoption Events and kids can be trained as dog handlers during the adoption day. (There will be training before the event and the parent/guardian should be with them the whole time.) See available volunteer opportunities here: https://www.foo-moo.com/volunteer
