Principal Message 

Dear Marshall Road Families,

There are so many wonderful events going on this week!  We are in the final week of Black History Month and have enjoyed learning about leaders across a variety of walks of life from social justice to art.  This is one of our favorite weeks of the year as we celebrate reading!  Please encourage your children to read a little extra every day this week, participate in the fun daily dress up days, visit the Book Fair and join us for the Family Reading Night on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 pm (in person or zoom).  Details about these events can be found below.   As a school, we have been focusing on the Love of Learning this month with reading being an important component of learning.

For the 2nd year in a row, Marshall Road was the recipient of the EPA’s Energy Star Award in recognition of our superior energy performance.  We are honored to receive this award and proud of the hard work of our students and staff to conserve energy at school! 

Please note that there will be no school for students on Tuesday, March 5 as this is a School Development Day for staff.

School Events & Information

Read Across America

Read Across America Week is officially here!  Every year, Marshall Road celebrates the joy and love of reading with fun events and activities.  This week we will enjoy dress up days, Family Reading Night on Wednesday evening, and of course, the Scholastic Book Fair!  If you would like your child to participate in the optional dress up days happening this week, please follow this schedule: 

  • Monday – Silly Socks Day: Read something silly and wear silly socks.
  • Tuesday – Favorite Color Day: Read your favorite book and wear your favorite color.
  • Wednesday – Book Character Day: Come to school dressed like a book character.
  • Thursday – Twin Day: Reading is more fun with a friend! Dress like a friend or teacher.
  • Friday – Comfy Cozy Day: Wear your PJs or something comfy and cozy up with a good book.

 

Spring Portraits and Class Photos

Spring Pictures will take place on Wednesday, March 6.  Parents will be able to view and order photos in their online gallery approximately ten days after picture day and will have a window of time to place an order with free shipping.  If you have any questions leading up to picture day, please reach out to Victor O’Neill Studios by emailing Underclass@vosphoto.com.

 

Yearbook Sales

Yearbook sales have begun, and pre-orders will be accepted through April 12.  Online orders can be placed using this Yearbook Order Form.  If you would prefer to pay $20.00 by cash or check, make checks payable to Marshall Road Elementary School, place cash or check in an envelope and write your child’s name, teacher name and YEARBOOK on the envelope.  Each yearbook is packed with candid photos, memories of the 2023-2024 school year, staff photos and individual photos of each student by grade level.  There will be a limited number of yearbooks available for purchase after all the prepaid orders are distributed during the last week of school.

Visit our Scholastic Book Fair This Week! 

Come revisit old favorites and explore new titles!  Every dollar you spend will directly benefit Marshall Road Elementary.    

Book Fair Hours:

Monday, February 26 – Friday, March 1, 8:30 am-5:00 pm

Family Reading Night: Wed, February 28, 5:00-7:00 pm

Families are welcome to shop in-person before or after school throughout the week or at our Family Reading Night.  Students will also have an opportunity to shop during the school day.  Purchases can be made by cash, credit card, check (payable to Marshall Road PTA), or eWallet.  

eWallet: Setting up an eWallet for your student empowers them to choose their own books and effortlessly check out at the Book Fair.  Any leftover funds can be saved for future Fairs.  Visit our school’s Book Fair homepage to learn more or to set up an eWallet account.    

Donate to Share the Fair: Scholastic’s All for Books is now Share the Fair, a program designed to ensure that every kid in school gets to experience the Book Fair.  Please consider rounding up your purchase, donating your extra change, or contributing to the MRES Share the Fair eWallet.  All money collected for Share the Fair will be used to buy books for students who may not otherwise be able to purchase them.   

Volunteer: There are still several spots open to volunteer.  Sign up for a Book Fair shift and help make this event a success!

Join us for Family Reading Night 

As part of Read Across America Week we will host a Family Reading Night on Wednesday, February 28, 5:00-7:00 pm.  Special guests will read stories; author/illustrator Zara Gonzalez Hoang will give a drawing demonstration; the Book Fair will be open and more!   A representative from the Patrick Henry Library will also provide information on library programs and help students sign up for library cards.  See a message from Zara Gonzalez Hoang here.

Seeking Nominees for the 2024-2025 PTA Board 

The MRES PTA has five Board positions that are each elected for a one-year term: President, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Events and Volunteers, Treasurer, and Secretary.  We are currently seeking nominees for the 2024-2025 school year.  Interested persons should contact a member of the Nominations Committee: Ismini Michail, Abdol Karbassi, or Vilma Hilton at nominations@marshallroadpta.org. 

Nominations will be taken at our next PTA meeting on April 11.  Elections will be at our May 22 PTA meeting.
