Attendance Matters

Did you know that:

  • Regular attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of school are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • According to research, students who graduate from high school can earn more money which can lead to better living conditions, better health, and increased access to medical services.
  • It doesn’t matter whether the absences are excused or not, chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement.
  • Starting in Kindergarten, missing 10 percent can make it harder to learn to read.
  • According to research, irregular attendance can predict high school dropout, less job opportunities, and diminished health.

Orientation for Rising Kindergarten

Will your child be age 5 by September 30?  If the answer is yes, your child will be eligible to start kindergarten in the 2024-25 school year!

Join us for the BMP Orientation for Rising Kindergarteners on Thursday, April 11, 2024 beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Meet the kindergarten teachers, learn about the school policies and procedures, take a tour of the school, and learn more about what you can do before your child starts school to set him or her up for success.

Registration packets will be made available during the event, and registration appointments will be scheduled.  Registration paperwork, including information about required documents and medical requirements, are located at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/kindergarten-registration

Informing Families About Eating Disorders

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Specialist Spotlight - Physical Education

Last Friday we finished up our dance unit with our annual mini dances held during the school day and our Family Dance Night. During our dance unit, students in all grade levels learned and practiced a variety of dances, including popular party dances and Zumba-style fitness dances. By the end of the unit, the students covered between 15-20 different dances.

This week we began our hand dribbling/basketball unit. During this unit students will be participating in various dribbling drills and activities to help them improve their hand dribbling skills. While the main focus of the unit is dribbling, the students are given some time to practice shooting at our baskets of different heights. In addition to dribbling and shooting, our students in 3rd-5th will also be working on passing skills in order to prepare for the modified basketball games they will be participating in during the last week of the unit.

Sneaker Reminder

In order for students to safely participate in all our PE activities and to perform to the best of their abilities, we need them to wear sneakers to PE class. Please have your child wear sneakers to school on their PE days or have them bring a pair of sneakers in their backpacks to change into for PE class. Feel free to contact us or your child’s classroom teacher to find out which days your child has PE class.

Real Food For Kids

  • Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge

The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 10:45 a.m., at Hayfield Secondary School. The event features a public tasting of student dishes and demonstrations from two local celebrated chefs.

The student challenge at the heart of this event is to create healthy, delicious, and culturally diverse school menu items that meet USDA guidelines. Entries will be judged by a panel including celebrity chefs, school food professionals, and local food producers. The public is invited to vote for their favorite dish.

Chefs Najmieh Batmanglij and Chris Morgan of Joon will offer a demonstration at 11:15 a.m. Public tasting of student dishes will get underway at noon.

Student-created dishes from this annual event have been featured on school menus throughout the Greater Washington Region. It is free to attend, but registration is required.

Getting to Know Your BMP Staff

Christine Watson, Librarian

Watson

Hi everyone - I’ve been the librarian at BMP since 2015.  I have my Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State (WE ARE!), my Master’s Degree from VA Tech, and my Library Certification from Longwood.  Can you tell which school has my heart?

I taught at an outdoor school and interned at the National Wildlife Federation before joining FCPS in 1991. I’ve taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades, but being a librarian is my dream job!  I’ve had my “nose in a book” since I was a kid, and that hasn’t changed.  I LOVE to read, and it’s my mission to instill that same love of reading in our students!

My husband Jeff and I live in Fairfax City.  We have two amazing kids in their mid-20’s - Nathan and Katie.  In my free time, I love to watch football, go to the beach, try new recipes, play games, do puzzles, binge watch Netflix and Hulu, take photos, and of course, read!
