Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

Thank you, Substitute Teachers!

subs

In the vast ecosystem of education, substitute teachers often play the role of unsung heroes. While their presence may seem short-term, their impact is anything but. Substitute teachers step into classrooms with enthusiasm, flexibility, and a dedication to ensuring that learning never stops, even in the absence of the regular teacher. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of substitute teachers and draw parallels to the mission of the Positivity Project organization.

At Wakefield Forest Elementary, substitute teachers support our school by helping to ensure the continuity of the learning process. When teachers are out, they are here in the classroom teaching and supporting students. Substitute teachers model adaptability to new environments, diverse populations, and teach a variety of subjects. They not only assist students but also support their fellow educators. By stepping in during times of need, they alleviate stress for teachers and ensure that instructional goals are met. Substitute teachers help create community with teachers, staff, and students through connection and familiarity.

At WFES, the P2 Crew has been working hard to recognize our substitute teachers through gratitude and acts of kindness. Students have created thank you cards to give to substitutes and thank you posters to display in the teachers’ lounge and at the desk where they sign in each day. Our goal is to ensure substitute teachers at WFES feel appreciated and valued in our school community. Our hope is that substitute teachers enjoy their experience at WFES and become regulars at our school or long-term substitutes in our community. More importantly, we want our students to develop a sense of appreciation for others and develop their Other People Mindset.

Pictured above are a few of our super substitutes of WFES: Mrs. Joslyn Osten, Mr. Tinklepaugh and Ms. Rule. Mrs. Osten is not only a substitute, but she is also a parent of 2 students in our community. Mr. Tinklepaugh is a familiar and favorite substitute teacher who students love to have in their classrooms. Ms. Rule is not only a substitute teacher, but she is also a parent and former WFES student! Not only that, but we often have former students who substitute teach or become members of our staff at WFES. Talk about community members of Wakefield Forest going full circle!

Time to Order Your WFES Yearbook

Don't wait...it is time to order your child's WFES 2023-24 yearbook. Deadline for yearbook ordering is 4/12.

Click on the link to order now:   Order a Yearbook

3/1-3/22 PTA Read-A-Thon

book

The WFES PTA is sponsoring participation in Read Across America March and will be helping your kids to “read across America” with a Read-A-Thon from March 1 to March 22.  Each page the students read will reflect 1 mile traveled, with the goal of reading enough pages to cover the distance from Annandale, VA to San Francisco, CA.

Each week, you can submit the number of pages your child has read (or that you have read to your child) the prior week electronically using this form, or you can fill out a paper version of this form that will be included in your child’s Thursday folder next week. Any paper forms completed must be submitted back to your child’s teacher no later than April 4.

Note that paper forms will be included in Thursday folders next week, but you can start counting pages read on Friday, March 1.

The child in each grade who has read the most pages (or has the most pages read to them) will win a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, and each Read-A-Thon participant will receive a bookmark.  But the biggest prize, of course, will be the joy of reading and, hopefully, finding some great new books in the process.

If you have any questions, please reach out to VP, Academics Erin Weber at erinrweber@gmail.com.

3/3 - 3/22 Family Engagement Survey

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website.
