Social and Emotional Learning Screener Offered in February

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.  It was offered to all students in grades 3-12 in October and will be offered again next week. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

SEL Screener results are sent to families via postal mail. Families who wish to opt their child out should complete the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or in SIS ParentVUE.

For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact your child’s school.

FCPS picture

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees, specifically at Bailey's Upper ES.

Kindness Month

From February 12-March 9 we will encourage kindness by having a BINGO challenge with prizes for those who complete the BINGO board (participation is optional), which was sent home in Thursday folders on February 8th. We will also have special kindness-focused Tiger Tickets. Ms. Sorto will also teach students a choreographed “Move with Compassion” routine in Dance classes, to be recorded on Friday, March 8th. The entire school will participate in the “Move with Compassion” dance. Finally, we plan to have the following spirit days to keep kindness a focused throughout the month (participation is optional):

  • Spread the Spirit of Kindness (February 16): Spread kindness around Bailey’s Upper by wearing orange and blue to school to show your school spirit.
  • Peace, Love, and Kindness (February 23): Wear tie dye or 70s clothing to spread peace, love, and kindness.
  • Work Out Problems with Kindness (March 1): Wear workout clothes to school to show how we “work out” problems with kindness.
  • Brighten Bailey’s Upper! (March 8): Wear any color of the rainbow to school to brighten up our school.

Current and upcoming Assessments at Bailey’s Upper

WIDA Testing is in progress. Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

The WIDA schedule for our remaining assessments is below.

  • February 12th – March 14 – WIDA students in all grades will be assessed in small groups by our ESOL Team during this time

If you have any questions regarding upcoming assessments, please contact Nicole Cassidy our School Testing Coordinators at 703-503-2700
