We had another amazing week at Bucknell Elementary School! Our monthly Spotlight Series is an opportunity for families to learn how you might support your children at home with their academics. This month the topic was reading!
As we move through Quarter 3, we want to take this time to remind everyone about the importance of attendance. Daily attendance has a huge impact on student academic achievement and progress. We’re so proud that at Bucknell ES we have decreased our absenteeism rate, this year, by 10%! This is a huge accomplishment. Thank you for ensuring that your children get to school each day and communicating with us so that we can support any challenges that you might be encountering. Together we will make sure that our students are learning at high levels and in the building to access all the amazing instruction that happens in this place.
Next week is the last week of February and we look forward to ending the month strong! Enjoy your weekend!

Tuesday, March 5 - SACC Open
Dear SACC Families,
We wanted to inform you of a change in the FCPS and SACC Calendar. Tuesday, March 5, 2024, is now a FCPS Teacher Workday. SACC will be open for the full day from 7 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. Children currently enrolled in Before and/or After School services may attend SACC for the full day.
Next week, an Anticipated Attendance Sheet will be posted in the center. In order to help center staff plan for the full day program, please use this sheet to indicate whether or not your child(ren) will be attending on Tuesday, March 5.
Please note, children will need to bring a lunch and drink from home, labeled with their name and the date, as the cafeteria will be closed.
As a reminder, FCPS and SACC are closed on Monday, February 19.

February Family Market Update
Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, the food delivery from Capital Area Food Bank came extremely late yesterday. Our volunteers who assist us each month had already been waiting for more than 3 hours. Unfortunately, we do not have the required number of volunteers and manpower to help us reschedule it. Additionally, the food will not be as fresh. Therefore, we have to cancel the February Market and it will resume on Wednesday, March 20th. We apologize to our families and the wider community for this inconvenience. We will see you in March.
Debido a circunstancias imprevistas fuera de nuestro control, la entrega de alimentos del Capital Area Food Bank llegó ayer muy tarde. Nuestros voluntarios que nos asisten cada mes ya llevaban más de 3 horas esperando. Desafortunadamente, no contamos con la cantidad necesaria de voluntarios y personal para ayudarnos a reprogramarlo. Spring Picture Day - February 28
 Bucknell's Spring Picture Day will be Wednesday, February 28. Students will take individual pictures and class pictures. Please make sure that students are on time for school so that they do not miss their class picture.

Families, this is notice that the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) screener is coming up soon! Students are scheduled to complete this important screener by March 8th. What is POG?
You might have heard your student talking about Portrait of a Graduate, or POG. What is POG? Very simply, POG is FCPS’ commitment to ensuring that all students have the skills to be successful today, tomorrow and in the future. POG is broken down into 5 important attributes: Communicator, Collaborator, Ethical & Global Citizen, Creative & Critical Thinker, and Goal-Directed & Resilient Individual. Consider how you, as an adult, use these skills to find success in your life!
Students use these skills in all school subjects, at home, in the community, with hobbies and interests, in future careers, passions, and relationships. We’re not focusing on these skills as an extra thing, students use these skills to learn all content areas in a deeper, more meaningful way.
How are students focusing on these skills?
- Learn about the skills, including what they look and sound like, and why they are important
- Apply the skills as they learn in their classes
- Reflect on HOW the skills helped them find success and WHAT they can do to grow
Throughout the year, you’ll see and hear how your child is learning to discuss their growth in these important skills. We’re excited to see them developing skills that will help them throughout life!

Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3
FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:
- Welcoming environment
- Communication
- Student success
- Advocacy
- Family and school partnerships
- Community partnerships
The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

Share Your Thoughts on Schoology
FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:
- Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
- Secondary students via email from Naviance.
Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

School Board Adopted Fiscal Year 2025 Advertised Budget
At last week’s regular business meeting, the School Board voted to adopt the Fiscal Year 2025 Advertised Budget.
The Advertised Budget is a needs-based budget that represents the funding needed to
support schools in the upcoming year. It focuses on educational excellence for each and every student and competitive compensation for our hard-working, dedicated, and results-driven staff.
The budget is closely aligned with FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which seeks a strong academic start for our youngest students and prepares our graduates for a thriving future. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction.
