A Note from the Principal

DRES Families,

As we navigate through another exciting week at Daniels Run School, there are a few special acknowledgments and reminders we'd like to share with our amazing community.

  • A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated band teachers, Ms. Meltzer and Dr. Mincer! The 5th and 6th grade beginning band students did an excellent job at their concert this past week.  Your hard work is truly appreciated, and we are fortunate to have such exceptional educators guiding our students.
  • Don't forget that tonight is Bingo Night at 6:00 pm! Join us for an evening of fun, laughter, and prizes!. Your participation and support are crucial to the success of these community-building activities.
  • A huge congratulations to our very own Instructional Assistant, Tammy Sparks! We are thrilled to announce that Tammy has been recognized as the Fairfax Pyramid Support Employee of the Year. This is a well-deserved honor for someone who consistently goes above and beyond to support our students and staff. We are incredibly proud to have Tammy as part of our Daniels Run School family.
  • The City of Fairfax is planning to install video cameras in some internal and external common areas of both Daniels Run ES and Providence ES. We invite you to attend a virtual informational session on March 21 at 6:30 pm where we will share details about the use of the cameras and address any questions from the community. A link to the meeting will be provided to each school community on the morning of March 21.

Thank you to everyone in our community for your continued support and engagement. Let's make Bingo Night a blast and extend our warmest congratulations to Tammy Sparks!

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact our main office at 703-279-8400 or contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu

Enjoy the weekend!

Attendance Matters

There’s not much we can do about the winter weather, but there are two key steps every parent can take to help avoid absences this year: Make back-up plans for bad weather and keep your children healthy.

Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

Children who miss too much school in kindergarten are less likely to read well by third grade. By middle school, absenteeism can predict who will graduate from high school.

P2 News

Dear Families,

Next week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.

Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

But making a commitment towards cheering on other people’s successes can be a great way to improve our own health, happiness, and relationships. People can take active steps to be more genuinely happy for the achievements of others. Ways to do this include; telling others about the success of your modest friend; noticing when your reaction to a sibling’s success is envy or jealousy -- and asking yourself why that is; reminding yourself that appreciating the excellence in another is a character strength; asking your successful teammates and classmates what they do to prepare for games or tests.

Being supportive of people who succeed is good for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being and when people cheer each other on it begins a reciprocal process that forges stronger relationships. Those relationships are the foundation for a strong culture in teams, schools, and businesses.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!
