Celebrating Black History Month

Our classrooms have been buzzing with excitement as we have been honoring Black History Month! Our students have been immersed in meaningful learning experiences, from captivating read-alouds and inspiring guest speakers to creative projects celebrating Black history and culture. There are countless learning experiences happening in all of our classrooms and a few highlights include:

  • Engaging poetry units: Honoring Black voices, past and present.
  • Immersive research: Expanding perspectives through the journeys of renowned Black Americans.
  • Creative expression: Using watercolor paints to create "stained glass biographies" of historical figures.
  • Music exploration: Listening journals highlighting the contributions of Black musicians.
  • Choice-driven learning: Diving deeper with a Black History Month choice board.

The school-wide spirit and celebration of Black History Month resonates throughout the school through our daily school news program anchored by our students. Throughout the month famous Black Americans have been featured to prompt discussion in our classrooms and during morning meeting.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! Throughout the year, we're committed to empowering our students to learn from the past, celebrate diversity, and shape a brighter future. We encourage families to continue to the conversation at home by connecting your family discussions with the power of history and its influence on our lives.

CELL PHONES, SMART WATCHES & TECHNOLOGY USE AT SCHOOL

Please talk with your child(ren) about the policy for phones, smart watches, and technology use while at school.

  • Phones for elementary school students must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
  • Teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities when appropriate.
  • Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.

When a device is used in a manner that is not aligned with these expectations it may be taken by the teacher or staff member and submitted to an administrator to be safely stored until a parent or guardian can pick it up. Please make sure your child(ren) are aware of this policy so we can work together to ensure devices are used appropriately at school.

Lightspeed Parent Report Request

FCPS has tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

Karaoke Night

Join us for our annual Karaoke Family Fun Night in the CPES Cafeteria on Friday, March 8, 2024 to raise money for our SCA fundraiser benefitting Northern Virginia Conservation Trust.  Admission is $5 cash only at the door.  Pizza, Rita’s Ice, drinks and other snacks will all be available to purchase that night, so come enjoy dinner and the musical talents of our students, staff and parents.   We will be hosting several therapy dogs from K9 Caring Angels that evening.   Finally, since the SCA is raising money to help protect the environment in Northern Virginia, we are including a free environmental solutions fair at the event, highlighting local businesses that offer solutions to some common environmental issues.   There will be something for everyone at this year’s Karaoke Night, so come ready to sing your heart out, be entertained, and raise money for a good cause!

Environmental Solutions Fair at Karaoke Night on March 8

Our Student Council Association is thrilled to share that our Spring fundraiser this year will go towards protecting the environment around us. As part of our annual Karaoke Night on March 8, we will be hosting a Local Environmental Solutions Fair. This opportunity is for raising awareness of solutions in our community, and no sales of items or services will be permitted the night of the event.  Look for more information in an upcoming Tuesday folder. If you or someone you know has a business or organization that provides an environmentally friendly service or solution in our area, please contact Ms. Senturia at lesenturia@fcps.edu about participating.

SCA Spring Fundraiser

Our school student leadership organization (SCA) is raising money for the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust to help protect blue heron habitats and other green spaces in Northern Virginia. The fundraiser starts Monday, February 26 and goes until Friday, March 15.  Donations can be sent in cash to your child’s classroom or can also be made online at https://donorbox.org/colin-powell-nvct.  Make sure to choose your classroom teacher from the drop down menu if you donate online.  Classes have set individual goals and will be earning fun rewards along the way.  Our whole school has set a goal of $10,000, which is enough to buy a piece of land in a blue heron nesting area.  If we reach our goal then the Principals will have a surprise for us.   Our student leaders thank you for supporting our fundraiser and helping Colin Powell Elementary School continue to make our world a better place!

Spelling Bee!

Bee

Congratulations: Sowmya Senthilnathan

I would like to congratulate Sowmya Senthilanathn from Ms. Bunch’s class for winning Colin Powell’s 2024 Spelling Bee last night.  She will represent CPES at the Fairfax County Spelling Bee on March 17th.  Should she not be able to make it; our runner-up, Aanya Ambegaonkar will take her place.  Please congratulate them both and wish them luck.

A huge thank you to Ms. Gabriel for being our pronunciator, Ms. Luerssen, Ms. Starbuck, and Ms. Lansdowne for volunteering their time as judges.

I would like to say that it was heartwarming to see all the participants encouraging each other and cheering for one another. It was my favorite part of the evening.  All the spellers from last night should be extremely proud of themselves.

                                                                  -Mary Kim (Spelling Bee Coordinator)
