Woodson International Night

Are you a great cook? Do you like food and performances from around the world? Are you looking for a Friday family night out? If the answer is yes to any of these questions above come to Woodson's International Night this Friday, Feb. 23rd. There is a potluck at 5 pm and performances from 6:30 - 9:30. Tickets are $10 for the show ($7 for kids under 12) and $5 for the potluck.

We are looking for more parents and students to bring and serve food for the potluck. If you have an amazing appetizer, main dish, or dessert that relates to your heritage sign up on the link below. You will be given a table to decorate with any items that you want to bring to reflect your culture/heritage. You can either stay by your table and serve or make it self serve.

Last year we had a great turnout and it was fun for both students and parents.

On March 14th student leadership would like to have a cookie handout for students during all lunches. In order to do so, we would require about 2,000 donated cookies. Cookies can be dropped off in the main office on Wednesday, March 13th or by 11am on the 14th. Parent Volunteers Needed!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

Varsity Boys Basketball:

The Cav boys' basketball team is gearing up for an intense showdown in the Regional playoff second round, set to take place at Hayfield High School at 7:30 pm on Tuesday night.

After earning the #4 seed in the district, the Cavs faced South County in a heart-pounding, overtime thriller in their first district tournament game. Despite trailing for a majority of the game, the team played with determination to close the game out. With the game tied and 10 seconds remaining, Kaylen Chilton's exceptional on-ball defense prevented SoCo from even attempting a game-winning shot. In overtime, the Cavs displayed exceptional teamwork and composure, securing the victory. Sean Donovan's clutch free throws put the Cavs up in OT and after a wild finishing sequence,  walked away with the victory marking a monumental milestone for Coach Craig, who celebrated his 300th career victory. A well-deserved and congratulations Coach Craig!

Next, facing the formidable #1 seed, Alexandria City, the Cavs delivered a stellar first-half performance capitalizing on smart, unselfish basketball to put AC in foul trouble and securing a 10-point lead at halftime. The team defense was on point the first half as well, with all players identifying the ball, the greatest threat, and rotating like a collective unit. It was a great first half. The second half saw AC being more aggressive and putting the Cavs in tight situations and forcing quick shots. Noah Limbago was forced into playing transition defense all too often and got three fouls in the third quarter. After three quarters, the Cavs were still up 36-34.

The fourth quarter was tight throughout with some good basketball by both teams. Ultimately, AC grinded out the win and a place in the District Championship. Woodson would be the Patriot District four seed in the Regional tournament playing Annandale High School in the first round.

Undeterred by the tough loss, the Cavs bounced back in the Regional tournament's first round against Annandale High School, dominating the game and securing a comfortable victory. Noah Limbago's stellar performance, coupled with contributions from the entire team, ensured a decisive win, setting the stage for a showdown against defending state champion Hayfield. After a small run by the Atoms early in the fourth quarter, the Cavs proved to be too strong and Coach Craig was able to get the entire Cav team some good minutes to close the first round of Regions.

As they prepare to face Hayfield in the next round, the Cavs are focused and determined and need to be. With the win-or-go-home stakes, the team is poised to leave it all on the court. Good luck to the boys on Tuesday night. It's time to rise to the occasion and make their mark in these playoffs.

Indoor Track:

Congratulations to our ladies who are Regional Championship runner-up. First time since 1992! The girls had an amazing two days and just about everyone scored in their event.

We had 3 Regional Champions; Keira Arenholz in the 1600m, Kendall Anderson in the 500m and Hadley Vanek in the 1000m with a new school record. Also, Barrett Pullen had a massive PR in the shot put and the girls 4x200m relay (Ashley Lofton, Emma Ishikawa, Grace Ewalt, Abby Ward) claimed a State Championship spot.

Girls Varsity Basketball:

Woodson Girls Basketball Logo

Woodson Varsity Girls had a strong showing in the District playoffs, with an impressive series of wins against Alexandria City and Lake Braddock, securing them a spot in the semifinals against Robinson on Thursday evening. Despite a tough loss that evening, the team continued their momentum by hosting Round 1 of Regional play on Saturday, where they secured a commanding 67-41 victory against Mount Vernon. The team is now gearing up for the Regional Quarterfinals @ Edison scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30pm.

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
