1.Principal’s Message

It is hard to believe that in February, we are already looking ahead to summer and next year.  Make sure that you take a minute to look through this newsletter to review all of the information about the 2024-2025 school year and summer programs. It is really important that we have our upcoming kindergartners register early so families are aware of all pertinent information and upcoming Kinder/school wide events.

Below is also information about the FCPS Magnet schools and the lottery registration. You will also see information about the incredible summer programs offered by FCPS. Many of these programs fill up quickly, so make sure you look at this now and register early!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski, Principal

2.Supporting Students During Ramadan

2

Ramadan, one of the holiest times on the Islamic calendar, begins on March 10th. We are here to support students who may need special considerations or accommodations during this time.  If your student will be fasting during Ramadan, please contact their homeroom teacher so that they are aware and able to support your student. Students who are fasting will have the option of joining another class while their class is at lunch.

If your student is observing restrictions regarding music, please contact Mary Gaskins (mngaskins@fcps.edu or via Talking Points) for information about accommodations we can provide in the music room.

5.Frost Family Festival

Thursday, February 22nd 5:30-7:15 PM at Frost Middle School

All rising 7th graders and their families are invited!

It is an open house format, with no formal presentation, so families can come at any time and visit locations of interest.

This event is also a fundraiser for the Frost PTA who provides volunteer and financial support for many programs at Frost.

One and two-slice pizza meals (including 1 drink and 1 baked item) and whole pizzas are available for PRE-PAID order. Pre-paid orders must be submitted by Monday, February 19th.

Aside from pre-paid orders, there will be limited food available on a first come first served basis at the event. Food purchased at the event will be slightly more expensive ($1/item or meal) to encourage pre-orders.

You may use our online payment option for meal purchase and/or PTA donation: https://frostms.ptboard.com/;

NOTE: This is a free event, food pre-orders are ONLY required if you are planning to have a meal at this event.

The PTA will also be selling Frost spirit wear in the lobby. Be ready for middle school with great Frost gear!

9.Eating Disorders Resources

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

10.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

1

We are making great progress to meet our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

  • A study of weather-related absences in Massachusetts found that each missed day affected a student’s test scores and grades. This was especially true on snowy days when school stayed open but some students missed class.
  • Please remember, Monday, February 19th is a school holiday.  We are eager to welcome your children back in school on Tuesday, February 20th.
