February is Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month at Deer Park, classes PK-6 chose a famous Black American across various careers (arts, sciences, entertainment, education, literature, politics, etc.) to read and learn more about as a class.  Classes in grades PK-3 created posters with their learning to display on the first floor of Deer Park and classes in grades 4-6 created Google slides that are being shown on the lobby.

FCPS Family Engagement Survey coming soon!

Fairfax County Public Schools will administer the third Family Engagement Survey from Sunday, March 3 - Friday, March 22. The survey is designed to further partnerships between schools and families and better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. This is a key opportunity to hear the family perspectives and voices and give feedback on your experience within FCPS.

Email invitations with unique survey links will be sent from K12 Insight to all adults who are connected to a student in SIS. Text messages will be sent to those families who prefer communications in languages other than English and paper surveys, translated in nine languages will be available at the school.

Survey Opens March 3rd and closes March 22nd.

Family input in a child’s education is critical to their success, and your participation in this survey is invaluable.

This year, FCPS is being guided by it’s Strategic Plan to support all students and schools in achieving their goals. FCPS has outlined specific targets in both reading and math that we have used to align the work being done in our building.

For reading, FCPS is striving for all students to read on grade level by 3rd grade. Deer Park is supporting this goal by analyzing our Lexia, Pals, i-ready, and VGA data to support all students in demonstrating growth in their literacy skills. Our teachers are focusing on consistent and targeted instruction and Lexia usage in their classrooms. We have implemented Lexia challenges in our building to increase student engagement and participation. At the mid-year review, 76% of our students using the Core 5 program are performing on or above grade level so far this school year. Teachers and our FCPS High Impact Tutors are providing interventions and enrichment opportunities in small groups for students who require additional support.

FCPS is focusing our math goals on performance on state, national, international assessments, as well as successful completion of Algebra 1 by 8th grade. Deer Park has analyzed our previous SOL data and current i-ready, VGA, and EMAS information to determine the areas of need in our building. Teachers are implementing number talks daily in their classrooms in order to increase number sense skills and retention of taught concepts. Our Buck Block and FCPS High Impact Tutors provide strategic enrichment and intervention for our students.

Deer Park prides itself on focusing on student voice in our building. As such, our school selected goal continues to support our students feeling safe, supported and included in our school environment. We are continuing the usage of our sensory pathways in the hallways and Zones of Regulation methodology throughout the building. 100 students were interviewed in our first round of wellness interviews, and 94% of those students reported liking coming to school. We are continuing to strengthen our community and family engagement through Movement Mondays, our Quarterly Recognition Program, Positive Behavior Referrals, and Zones of Regulation collaborative communication.

This is a snapshot of all of the wonderful things happening in our building and we will continue to share updates on our progress and initiatives.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Do you have a rising Kindergartener who will be 5 by September 30th? Enrollment is in progress and we are excited to meet them.

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Learn more about Registration documents here,  and then contact our Registrar  for an appointment to enroll your child.

We will have a Kindergarten Orientation on May 3rd at 9:00 a.m. when you and your child will be invited to meet our Principal, Mr. D'Amato, Assistant Principal, Mrs. Hitz and other staff members. While the students visit the Kindergarten classrooms, you will learn about the Kindergarten program and discuss administrative matters such as schedules and buses.

For support in Spanish, please contact our Family Liaison, Mrs. Arevalo.

Please register early and share this information with your neighbors! We are looking forward to welcoming our new Kindergarteners in August!
