Mason Softball Team Visit

Our week got off to a winning start with a visit from our amazing adopt-a-school partners, the Mason Softball team! These student-athletes traded in their cleats for bowling shoes and joined our kindergarteners for an afternoon of strikes, spares, and laughter. It was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the positive impact role models can have. Thank you, Mason Softball, for kicking off our week with a strike-tacular time!

Valentine's Day Fun

A Message from the Admin Team

Admin Team Photo

Dear Little Run Family,

What a week it's been! Our halls were buzzing with excitement and heartwarming moments, both inside and outside the classroom.

Our kindergartners had a "strike-tacular" start to the week, hitting the lanes with their heroes from the Mason Softball team during P.E. class! It was an afternoon filled with cheers, high fives, and the joy of mentorship blossoming alongside teamwork.

We believe in supporting our partners wholeheartedly, and that includes cheering them on from the sidelines. So mark your calendars and show your Roadrunner spirit loud and proud by joining us as we cheer on the Mason Patriots, our adopt-a-school partners, at their games on Saturday, March 2nd at noon against Stony Brook (promotion: strike out cancer weekend and canned food drive) and Sunday, March 17 at noon against Dayton (promotion: mental health awareness weekend and youth day)! Together, let's create a sea of green and gold as we celebrate teamwork, community, and the power of making a difference! Click HERE to access the full Mason Softball schedule.

Moving onto Valentine's Day, we saw connections strengthen at the delicious mentor-mentee breakfast orchestrated by our incredible school counselor, Ms. Sutton. Little Run's dedication to fostering meaningful relationships is truly inspiring. And of course, we couldn't forget our amazing staff on Valentine's Day! We surprised them with special treats as a token of our appreciation for their tireless efforts and dedication to every student.

But learning never stops at Little Run! Classrooms were alive with electrifying science experiments, captivating stories, and engaging lessons that ignite a love of learning and empower our students to grow.

Just a friendly reminder, there's no school tomorrow, Monday, February 19. We'll be back with open arms on Tuesday, February 20.

Thank you for being part of this vibrant and supportive community. You make Little Run a special place where hearts connect, minds grow, and learning thrives.

Warmly,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

The Little Run Way in Specials

The Little Run Way in Specials

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way in SPECIALS!

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful while learning in specials (music, art, P.E., FLES, library, etc.)?
  • How do you show responsibility when you are in specials with your classmates?
  • What does it mean to be ready while participating in specials?

The Positivity Project at Little Run

Positivity Project Logo

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations, and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humility with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

Photo of students on playground

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process.
