Message from Ms. Kearns

Hello Bruin Families -

We have had a fun week in Bruin Nation! Thank you to our SGA for coordinating LOVE Spirit Week. I think the staff enjoyed it as much as, if not more than, the students!

We also honored our School Resource Officers on SRO Appreciation Day. We are grateful for Officers Segur and Tillman and their work keeping our school safe and secure. Working alongside our SROs are the members of our Security Team, Mr. Cabrera, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Bolden, Ms. Glenn, Mr. Twombley, and Ms. Walker. Day in and day out, they are giving 110% to ensuring our students and staff are safe.

We are also excited to share some congratulations. Our FBLA Chapter won three 1st place, three 2nd place, and one scholarship finalist awards at their recent regional academic competition. And the student managers of DECA's two school-based enterprises (Spirit Box and Burger Pit) received Gold Level Certification for the 10th year. Perfect timing as we celebrate CTE Month!

Lindsey Kearns

New Information and Important Reminders

March 5 Student Holiday

March 5 has been designated a day off for students due to the Primary Election. However, the Purple and Gold Calendar will not be adjusted and March 4 and 6 will remain gold days.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener, March 4 or March 6, 2024

All students will participate in the SEL Screener on March 4 or March 6, 2024 through Advisory classes. This is the spring edition of the screener, as students also participated in October. If you opted your student out of the screener in the Fall, they will still be opted out of the Spring screener. If you would like to opt your child out of this screener, you may find that information on our school website at this link: https://lakebraddockss.fcps.edu/B2S-SEL.

March 22 Schedule and Spring Break

March 22 marks the end of the 3rd quarter; however, it is not an early release day. The schedule will be adjusted for the MS Team Day Challenge, so that 2nd and 8th periods are flipped. March 22 is also the last day of school before Spring Break and two additional teacher workdays on April 1 and 2. School will resume on Wednesday, April 3.

100 Day Senior Meeting

We are quickly approaching the big day for our Class of 2024. Lake Braddock and the PTSA will be hosting our 100 Day Senior Meeting on March 7th at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. All parents and guardians are encouraged to attend and hear about the upcoming events leading up to Graduation Day.

At the meeting, we will be discussing important information about Senior Fees, Prom, our mulch sale fundraiser, the Bridging Bruins program, our End of Year Calendar, the Graduation Ceremony, and the All Night Graduation Party.

Please join us in the cafeteria to kick off the last 100 days of school for the Class of 2024.

Senior Fees

We are in the process of planning a meaningful graduation experience for the class of 2024. As we plan our various events, our top priority will be to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Understanding our plans may have to be adjusted along the way to adhere to FCPS guidelines, we are committed to making these events memorable and special. During our planning process, we also reviewed our budget and assessed our senior fees.

Senior fees typically cover all school-based costs for the students related to their graduation, such as: diplomas, flowers, caps, gowns, printing, and transportation. Senior fees do not include the costs incurred by individual students, such as: yearbooks, graduation announcements, All Night Graduation Party tickets, graduation photos, or a graduation DVD.

The Senior Fees for the Class of 2024 is $75.00. We encourage you to pay early. The deadline for senior fees is Friday, May 31 to be able to process all obligations and receive your cap and gown after graduation practice. The preferred method of payment for Senior Fees is MySchoolBucks (MSB). Beginning Monday, January 2, 2024, the Senior Fee product will be available in the MSB School Store. The instructions for online payments can be found on the Lake Braddock Secondary School website. If you would rather pay with cash or check, these payments can be dropped off in any of the high school sub schools. If paying with a check, please make your check payable to LBSS, memo “senior fee”. Checks can also be mailed to Lake Braddock, Attn: Finance Office. All seniors, even those who will not graduate until Summer School 2024, must pay the senior fees. No personal checks will be accepted after May 5, 2024. If there are concerns about being able to pay the fee and your student is on a free or reduced waiver, please come see Scott Darwin in Subschool 6.

Seniors must also meet all previously accumulated debts to the school. Caps and Gowns will not be given to any students until all obligations have been met and senior fees have been paid. Please start looking at MSB and clearing those obligations now.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Darwin, Subschool 6 Assistant Principal and Senior Class Administrator.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.
