Dear Poplar Tree Families,
What a whirlwind week it's been! We had an unexpected snow delay, the warm fuzzies of Valentine's Day, the PTA sponsored Spelling Bee, and last Friday our first House incentive reward which was a Dance/Game Party. Congratulations to the Green House for earning the most purple tickets! (You can see a Facebook Reel of all the fun dancing HERE!) On Monday all Houses started back at zero. Our next incentive prize for the winning house (most purple tickets) will be a Craftathon. The Craftathon will include an origami, friendship bracelet, and paper airplane stations, a selfie booth, and a few other fun activities. We can't wait to see which house earns this prize!

Sign up for our FREE Stem Enrichment Club. Learn from High School Volunteers who bring their passion and knowledge of STEM to introduce Machine Learning and AI to elementary grades!

📚 K-2 Author Visits 📚
Author Debra Shumaker will be speaking with students in grades K-2 about being an author and fascinating animal adaptations on Friday, February 23. We’ve made arrangements for Debra to personalize and sign books for any readers who would like to purchase them through Scrawl Books in Reston. They will be delivered to Poplar Tree after the school visit.
Orders may be placed online HERE. Under “Calculate Shipping Costs,” please select “Poplar Tree Elementary Author Visit $0.00.” For a personalized copy, in the “Order Comments” box, list the name of the student(s) you would like Debra to sign the book to! Orders close Monday, February 26, 2024 and books will be delivered and distributed the following week.

The Games Have Come to Life! Calling all board gamers! No, not bored gamers, I mean gamers who like to play board games! For one night only, Kwon’s Champion School Fairfax will be hosting the Ultimate Game Night where the board games come to life! Get ready to checkmate your opponent, sink their battleship, and destroy the competition in this Ultimate Game Night where your child will have the chance to play some of their favorite table games in a life size setting! Don’t wait, spots will go fast!
💻 VGA Results 💻
Families of students in grades 3-6 who participated in the Winter VGA, will soon be receiving VGA results in the mail.
- The Winter VGA primarily assessed reading/math standards for the current year.
- This is different from Fall VGAs, which primarily assessed content from the previous year.
- Therefore, the score from the Fall cannot be compared to the Winter.
The VGA is just one of many data points school staff collect throughout the school year. School staff use VGA results together with other available data to create a more complete picture of your student’s academic performance.
If you have any questions about your students’ progress, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
💕 Spring SEL Screener 💕
The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 between Feb. 26 and March 14 on a day selected by each classroom teacher. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener also helps them evaluate how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener at THIS LINK.

Mark your calendars!! Come grab dinner and have some fun at at MOD Pizza on Thursday, February 29th. A portion of the proceeds on this day will go to the Poplar Tree PTA. Make sure to mention that you are there for the Poplar Tree Fundraiser and/or bring the paper that will be sent home in your child's Friday Folder.
